Lu Yuwen owned two restaurants.

On the way to the high-speed rail station, he called the restaurant manager and briefly mentioned his upcoming surgery–just a heads-up for the staff.

By then, traffic was heavily congested, car horns blared in waves, and pedestrians hurried past on both sides of the street, their expressions giving away nothing unusual.

Despite burning curiosity, Lu Yuwen held back his emotions and found a nearby restaurant to settle his dinner first.

After eating, he ordered a cup of tea and drank it slowly, intentionally dragging out time.

The restaurant grew quieter as fewer customers remained. At 11 o’clock, the restaurant closed, and Lu Yuwen left, strolling unhurriedly along the sidewalk.

Nearby shops gradually extinguished their lights, leaving only a 24-hour convenience store open.

Lu Yuwen stepped into the store and bought a small guidebook for local tourist attractions.

The young store clerk couldn’t resist asking, “Are you waiting for someone?”

Lu Yuwen came back to himself and smiled gently. “Something like that.”

The female clerk adopted a casual tone. “Waiting for your girlfriend?”

Lu Yuwen just smiled.

He ought to reply that he didn’t have a girlfriend, but he knew all too well that answering this way would steer their casual chat in a new direction. To avoid unnecessary trouble, perhaps he should just nod and say yes…

As his mind weighed the best response, a loud *bang* echoed from down the street!

Followed by the screeching wail of sudden brakes!

Alarmed, Lu Yuwen looked in the direction of the noise and saw a man sprawled in the middle of the road. Not far away, a red car sped off into the night!

“Quick! Call an ambulance!” Lu Yuwen dropped that urgent command and bolted out the store.

The accident victim turned out to be a middle-aged man around fifty years old.

Because the car had already slowed before impact, his injuries weren’t severe, but the incident triggered a myocardial infarction. Without Lu Yuwen’s prompt action to get him to the hospital, the consequences could have been dire.

If it was something else, had he already missed it?

“Was it you who hit my dad?!”
