“Manman!… Man… Su Man! Stop it now!”

At the end of the corridor, a middle-aged woman ran over, panting heavily and yelling anxiously:

“This is Mr. Lu, the man who brought your father to the hospital, not the one responsible for the accident!”

The middle-aged woman gasped for air as she reached them, grabbing the young girl’s hand and forcefully pulling her away!

Su Man let go, looking dazed and confused.

The middle-aged woman immediately apologized to Lu Yuwen:

“I’m so sorry! This is my daughter–she’s a bit impulsive. You weren’t hurt, were you?”

Lu Yuwen couldn’t help but size up the girl named Su Man.

She looked to be in her early twenties, with strikingly beautiful features. Her short, chin-length hair framed a delicate, pointed jaw. Thick, black eyelashes, resembling tiny fans, partially veiled her eyes, obscuring their expression. Her dainty nose had a slight upturn, while her small, tenderly red lips were tightly pursed into a downward curve, conveying an air of unease.

Her lashes fluttered twice as she awkwardly glanced up at him, only for her gaze to shift away in embarrassment.

“I-I’m sorry, Mr. Lu,” Su Man stammered in apology, her expression earnest yet rigid. Her ears were tinged red.

Lu Yuwen stared at Su Man steadily.

He looked for so long that Su Man grew uncomfortable, furrowing her brows before abruptly raising her head and glaring at him. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

Lu Yuwen froze, snapping back to reality.

Su’s mother observed the interaction carefully, then grabbed Su Man’s arm and scolded her, “What kind of attitude is that?! If it weren’t for his kindness in bringing your father here, who knows what would’ve happened to your dad! Now hurry up and say thank you!”

Su Man felt utterly mortified. She was already a grown adult, yet here she was being dragged about by her parent to apologize and give thanks…

Lu Yuwen’s expression turned a bit sheepish as well.

Earlier, he had thought Su Man looked familiar, which had left him momentarily staring in a daze.

But there was no way he could say that–otherwise, she might misunderstand it as some lame and distasteful attempt at flirting.

So, he diverted the conversation instead, “Mr. Su is already awake–why don’t you go in and see him?”

“We really can’t thank you enough,” Su’s mother expressed her gratitude again and again. “You’ve taken so much trouble going in and out of the hospital this late at night. Was the phone call earlier from your number? We’ll transfer the medical expenses to you later.”

Lu Yuwen replied, “That call was from the hospital; my number is…”

Su’s mother tugged Su Man’s arm again, saying, “Note down Mr. Lu’s number. I’ll go in to check on your dad first.”

“Oh, okay…” Su Man took out her phone.

Su’s mother entered the hospital room and saw the man lying on the bed. Her earlier worry and anxiety transformed into urgent anger as she scolded sharply:

“Just look at yourself! Out in the middle of the night instead of coming home, running around on the street! Now look what happened–got yourself hit by a car!”

Su’s father had just woken up not long ago; her yelling gave him a headache. He spoke weakly, “I was driving home, but then my craving for a cigarette hit me. So, I parked the car by the roadside and tried crossing the street to buy some. Who would’ve thought a car would suddenly come out of nowhere…”

“The driver was careless, but weren’t you just as thoughtless? Can’t you even watch the road when crossing the street?”

“Hey, isn’t that victim-blaming? I’m the one who got hit!” Su’s father sighed. “I’m the injured party here…”

Su’s mother was furious, but when she looked at the bandages on her husband, her anger gave way to sadness and frustration. She let out a heavy snort and muttered under her breath, “Neither the young nor the old ever give me peace!”

Su’s father froze for a moment, then asked, “Huh? What’s wrong with Manman?”

Su’s mother replied coldly, “Ha, she was just outside trying to beat up the man who saved your life, mistaking him for the culprit.”

Su’s father panicked and tried to sit up, “That’s unacceptable! I’ve got to apologize to him right away!”
