Yueying looked pitiable, and couldn’t help but discuss with Yueyao in a soft voice, “Third younger sister, just let Nanny Hao and Hua Lei do it! The cooking skills of Cai Lan and her lot are simply dreadful; at this rate, someone’s going to die of starvation.” She really couldn’t stand it anymore.

Yueyao said indifferently, “What does it matter if they’ve never done it before? It’ll taste better after a few more tries.” Yueyao would not take over all these chores just because the meals prepared by Cai Lan and her group were bad.

Yueying didn’t know what to say anymore. Cai Lan, however, was grinding her teeth, “Third Young Lady, we just can’t do the cooking, but I can pick vegetables, wash rice, do the laundry, and sweep the yard.” Cai Lan always picked the easier tasks.

Cai Qing kept her head down and said nothing.

Yueying, not wanting to endure such horrible meals any longer and nearly starving by then, said, “Third younger sister, aside from fetching water, chopping firewood, and cooking, let those two do all the other chores. Just let Nanny Hao manage the kitchen!”

Yueyao, no longer arguing with Yueying, looked at Cai Lan and Cai Qing and asked, “Aside from fetching water, chopping firewood, and cooking, you’ll take care of everything else?”

Cai Qing was reluctant, but Cai Lan quickly replied, “Yes.”

Yueyao didn’t waste any more words but turned to Yueying and said, “Eldest sister, this is the last time. If your maids complain again that they are too tired or can’t do it, either send them back, or from now on we each manage our own meals separately. We shouldn’t mix everything together.”

Cai Qing felt a twinge in her heart, as the statement was all too clear. They couldn’t go back on their words now; there were only two options left.

Yueying’s expression turned ugly; Yueyao was threatening her.

It was only in these few days that Yueyao came to understand Yueying’s temperament. Yueying seemed easy to talk to, but that was only as long as you didn’t threaten her interests. Once her interests were threatened, she wouldn’t budge an inch.

Upon receiving Yueyao’s command, Nanny Hao went to the kitchen and cooked two bowls of noodles. Yueying devoured the noodles in no time, not even leaving behind any soup. Had it not been necessary to maintain her dignity, she would have asked for another bowl, as she was really still hungry.

Nanny Hao, understanding and considerate, asked, “Eldest Miss, there’s still some in the kitchen, shall I get you some more?” Seeing that Yueying didn’t respond but was looking at Yueyao, she asked, “Miss, would you like to have some more as well?”

Yueyao nodded slightly: “Add half a bowl for me, please!”

Only then did Yueying pass her bowl forward, and that day at noon, everyone had noodles.

After the meal, Hua Lei looked at Cai Lan and commanded, “Make sure these bowls and chopsticks are cleaned properly.” After all, they had taken on these chores themselves, and they had to deliver on their words.

Cai Lan fetched the bowls and chopsticks to wash, her hands coated with grease. After washing the dishes, she cleaned the kitchen, and then was made to sweep the yard of fallen leaves, much to Cai Lan’s exasperation who felt like throwing in the towel.

Qiao Lan said coldly, “This place doesn’t keep freeloaders.” After saying this, she turned and went back to the kitchen, sharing a knowing smile with Hua Lei.

Finally having a moment to herself, Cai Lan ran to Yueying’s room and complained, “Miss, the Third Young Lady doesn’t respect you at all. No matter what, you are her elder sister and she shows no respect for you. She disrespects Madam in the mansion and now you as the elder sister outside too.”

Yueying shook her head, “It was actually my own insistence to come here.” She certainly felt discontented; Yueyao clearly didn’t regard her at all. Otherwise, she wouldn’t treat her maid this way. But this time, Yueying was in the wrong and didn’t have the confidence to argue with Yueyao.

Cai Lan felt a surge of frustration. Why had she encountered such a meek master?
