Chapter 9: Meal For Two

She decided it would be necessary to correct his behavior. A child shouldn’t be too picky with their food.

However, before she could say anything, Luo Qinghan put his chopsticks down and quietly declared, “I’ll make something myself.”

This time, it was Zhe Huo’s turn to be shocked. “Qinghan, you can cook, too?”

Qinghan watched her with serene blue eyes. Pleasantly, he asked her, “What would you like to eat?”

Zhe Huo was at a loss. “I, uh… anything’s fine.”

Fei Zhao, on the other hand, rattled off a whole list of dishes. After he was finished, Qinghan blinked at him and drawled, “It’s not like I’m making anything for you.”

And with that, he strode into the kitchen as though he owned it. The other two stared at each other, and then Fei Zhao snorted, “As though a little brat like him can cook anything worth a damn!”

But when Qinghan returned with a pan of steamed fish that was absolutely mouth-watering to behold, Fei Zhao was utterly flabbergasted—and so was Zhe Huo. Clearly she had not expected that the boy would be able to produce something of this level.

Sitting down, Qinghan began to work on another clean dish, meticulously picking out the fine bones from the meat. After he’d cleaned half the fish in this way, he pushed it over to Zhe Huo, and winked invitingly. “Eat.”

This was almost too much for Zhe Huo, who nodded meekly and took a bite. “Qinghan, you’re amazing!” she breathed, astonished. “This is delicious!”

Qinghan’s big eyes sparkled with joy. He grinned shyly.

It had already been agonizing for Fei Zhao to watch Qinghan deboning the fish for Zhe Huo. Hearing her shining review, he sputtered, “Zhe Huo, could it really be that good?”

Zhe Huo nodded earnestly. “It really is!”

Fei Zhao reached out gingerly with his chopsticks, but Qinghan seized ahold of them in an iron grip that didn’t match his size. Fei Zhao was forced to let go, and he snarled, “Can’t I even have a taste?”

As he set about deboning the other half of the fish, Qinghan quietly replied, “I only made enough for Zhe Huo and me. If you want any, you’ll have to make it yourself.”

Fei Zhao burst into tears of rage.

For the next several days, Qinghan prepared all of Zhe Huo’s meals for her. She’d go out and catch some minor demons to exchange for a few spirit gems, then come back to find a scrumptious feast waiting for her.

There were new flowering trees growing in the yard, scenting the air with their sweet fragrance. The windows were thrown open in her room, which was clean and bright. A bonsai arrangement sat in a pot on her windowsill, presenting a charming sight from any angle.

Zhe Huo was liking this kid more and more. He was even better than she’d expected. Not only was he obedient, he was also very good to her, and never caused her any trouble.

Originally, she hadn’t been planning to look after him for long. However, it actually seemed like she was the one being looked after. Life was good right now, and any notion of getting rid of him vanished entirely.

Eventually, Wu Shan returned.

Half a month ago, he had accepted a task in the Tiancheng area which was said to be worth two hundred thousand spirit gems. The risk was commensurately higher, but demon hunting was a dangerous profession anyway. The people of Lavender Mountain were not easily frightened, and Wu Shan was the most accomplished mage amongst the disciples there. No one doubted that he’d get the job done—if anything, the only surprise was that it had taken him so long.

Well, at least he was back now.
