At nine o’clock in the evening, Ye Qilan left the dinner with Su Hongxing. The two had planned to head home early, but unexpectedly ran into Beichuan on the way out.

Ye Qilan’s face darkened the moment he saw Beichuan. He held Su Hongxing’s hand, intending to leave.

Beichuan noticed this and called out to Su Hongxing instead: “Su Su, it’s rare to run into you. Have a couple of drinks with me before you go.”

Su Hongxing felt a sharp pain in her hand–this was Ye Qilan showing signs of anger. She turned her gaze toward Ye Qilan, attempting to calm him with her eyes.

Beichuan, however, was utterly tactless. The more unsatisfied Ye Qilan was to see him, the more he wanted to provoke him.

“Su Su, does that man Ding know you were once my fiancee? Given his character, do you really think–”

“Beichuan, don’t even try to provoke me unless you’ve got a death wish!” Ye Qilan stared at Beichuan, his gaze as sharp as a dagger.

Beichuan froze for a moment, inexplicably struck with some fear. He had always been a fearless person, known for being undaunted by anything…except Ye Qilan. Nobody else had ever made him yield.

But this man, with just one look, induced a chilling sense of dread in him–to the point that Beichuan could swear he saw murder in Ye Qilan’s eyes.

“Beichuan, I’ll say it again: from now on, take a detour if you see me. My husband has a temper–don’t rile him up.” Having said this, Su Hongxing pulled Ye Qilan away.

Beichuan, annoyed at Su Hongxing’s reaction, shouted at her retreating figure: “I misjudged you. Su Hongxing, you betrayed Sisi–this is an undeniable fact! Despite how good he was to you, he hadn’t been gone long before you ran into another man’s arms. Don’t you fear he’ll be so enraged he’ll crawl out of his grave and haunt you endlessly–?”

Even after leaving The Red House, Beichuan’s words continued to echo relentlessly in Su Hongxing’s mind.

Could this be considered a betrayal of another Ye Qilan? Even though she had convinced herself they were the same person.

Ye Qilan sensed the change in Su Hongxing’s mood. Knowing her as well as he did, he could roughly gauge what she was thinking.

In moments like these, nothing he said would help–she had to reconcile her emotions herself.

On the way home, Su Hongxing stayed lost in thought, barely acknowledging Ye Qilan. It wasn’t until they were nearing Qingmu Garden that she remembered him.

He was notoriously temperamental, and he knew her well. He must have seen her reactions earlier; surely, he understood what was on her mind?

“Ye Qilan, just give me a little more time…” She meekly explained, afraid he might be upset.

Ye Qilan smiled faintly. “I’m not upset. If you weren’t conflicted, you wouldn’t be you.” She was always deeply emotional, a fact he understood all too well.

Nonetheless, the person he envied was another version of himself–a contradiction he had little choice but to accept.

Su Hongxing breathed a sigh of relief and, hand-in-hand with Ye Qilan, walked into the living room.

Little Pudding was curled up in Old Lady Jiang’s arms, nodding off. Seeing them return, she immediately perked up: “Mommy’s finally home!”

“Silly girl, if you’re sleepy, just sleep. Why force yourself to stay awake?” Su Hongxing picked up Little Pudding and bounced her lightly in her arms. “Heavier now.”

This little one had grown again.

“I want to sleep with Mommy.” Little Pudding clung to Su Hongxing’s neck, her soft, sweet baby voice melting Su Hongxing’s heart.

This child had no other talents but was an expert at speaking and knowing exactly how to win her favor.

“The child is tired, and you’re used to sleeping early. Go rest.” Ye Qilan stepped forward, giving Little Pudding’s chubby cheeks a gentle squeeze. His amused gaze betrayed the fact that he saw through the little one’s ploy to monopolize their attention.
