Chapter 14: A Chance Encounter

Knowing that she was talking about him, and knowing that she was looking at him, Fu Jingheng shot her a look, raised his hand, and called to the waiter.

When the waiter walked over, he requested a cup of warm water, saying that his had gotten cold. His expression, words, and behavior were very smug.

And Su Tanqing, on the other end of the phone, happened to hear Fu Jingheng’s voice. She immediately recognized his voice and covered her mouth in horror. “I’m getting off the phone. It really is my boss’s voice. What the heck is the situation? Yan Yan, how can you and that devil be eating together?”

Nan Yan pursed her lips and thought about everything that had happened before coming to the restaurant. She herself couldn’t understand why she was dining with him.

“A chance encounter.”

“What a cliche. It’s been less than half an hour, yet you and my boss are already dining together?” 

As Su Tanqing said these words, her mind was already filled with romantic scenes. She even had the ending all thought out.

Nan Yan felt helpless against Su Tanqing’s outrageously wild imagination. She kept feeling that Fu Jingheng had called the waiter deliberately, and she kept feeling that making him listen to their conversation on the phone wasn’t very appropriate either.

Therefore she said to Su Tanqing, “I’ll look for you later.” And then she hung up the phone.

“I’ve heard that you and Su Tanqing have been best friends since childhood.” As soon as Nan Yan put down the phone, Fu Jingheng’s low voice commented from the other side of the table.

“Little uncle, are you asking about Tanqing?” Looking at him with mirth in her eyes, Nan Yan leaned back in her chair in a leisurely manner.

“I’m just asking casually, no big deal.”

“It’s reasonable that since Tanqing is an artist under your company’s management, you would know about her identity and background. You asking me about her seems a bit superfluous.”

“Why do you think that I’m interested in Su Tanqing?”

“If it’s not Tanqing, then could it be possible that…” Nan Yan chuckled lightly. 

Halfway through this sentence, she suddenly felt that something was amiss. Her eyes widened in surprise and bewilderment as she asked, “Little uncle, is it possible that you’re deliberately trying to ask questions about me?”

“I told you I was just asking casually as part of a normal conversation.”

“Speaking of conversations, I’m actually curious about one more thing. I don’t know whether you can help me out?” Nan Yan was intrigued.

“Speak.”

“Some time ago, I read a news report saying that you and the international superstar Shi Muyue, one of the four most popular celebrities, were seen coming out of a hotel together. Rumor had it that a secret romance between you two had been exposed. Was this true?” Nan Yan had a bright smile on her face as she started to gossip.

Looking at the innocent smile on her face, Fu Jingheng frowned and asked calmly, “Do you hope it’s true?”

Nan Yan definitely wasn’t expecting that he would ask that, so she was taken aback. However, then she smiled. “I was just making a joke. I was being gossipy. Although the studio issued a press release to clarify the situation, I read her statement in the press release: where there’s smoke, there’s fire. I just couldn’t help but be curious. Didn’t you just say that we were having a conversation?”

“It was fake.”

“What was fake? Was Shi Muyue’s statement fake, or…”

“The romance rumors were fake.” Fu Jingheng interrupted her. “The media is always making groundless accusations based on smoke and rumors.”

“Okay!” Her gossipy spirit had been completely wiped out by his concise sentences.

She actually wasn’t very familiar with Fu Jingheng. If she thought about it seriously, this was only the third time that they had met. The first time had been at Old Master Fu’s 70th birthday three years ago and the second time had been at the Fu family’s castle a few days ago.
