“Um…” Zhai Shiyu glanced at the gossipy Xia Feng, and, with her toes scratching the ground, she blushed as she asked, “May I…speak to you in private?”

“…” Cheng Zhiyan fell silent for a moment. Then he noticed Xia Feng gesturing for him to go ahead. After some consideration, he walked a few steps to the side. “Okay, come on over here.”

Zhai Shiyu blushed as she followed Cheng Zhiyan.

At the corner of the hallway, there was a wall that offered some concealment. Cheng Zhiyan stopped in his tracks, turned around, and asked Zhai Shiyu, “Well, what’s the matter?”

“Um…I…I wrote a letter to you a few days ago…” Too worried to look him in the eyes any longer, Zhai Shiyu kept her head down as she fumbled with her hands and stammered, “You…you’ve received it, haven’t you?”

“I received it.”

“Then…then did you take a look at it?”

“No, I didn’t take a look at it.”

“Why not?” Zhai Shiyu lifted her head in astonishment as she exclaimed.

“Sorry, no interest.” The corners of Cheng Zhiyan’s lips turned up into a faint smile, and his voice was gentle. Standing there, he gave off a friendly, warm vibe, yet the words that had come out of his mouth made her feel so disappointed inside.

“Why?” Unwilling to accept his decision, Zhai Shiyu continued to ask him questions. “Perhaps you already have someone you like?”

“No.” When Cheng Zhiyan said this, for some inexplicable reason, the pitiful image of Xiaotu, sitting alone in a chair in the preschool classroom while carrying a huge backpack as she anxiously awaited his arrival, came into his mind.

“Do you have anything else to say? If not, I’m going to continue with our cleanup now.” Cheng Zhiyan suddenly felt a little irritated inside, and he lifted his head to look at Zhai Shiyu, as she bit her bottom lip in dissatisfaction. He waved his hands, then turned around and headed back to his classroom.

“I…” Zhai Shiyu watched Cheng Zhiyan leave without turning back, and she suddenly felt a tremendous sorrow inside.

Cheng Zhiyan returned to the window that he’d been wiping moments before. He glanced down at the rag in his hand and continued wiping.

Upon seeing him return, Xia Feng, who had been busy wiping another window, quickly came to Cheng Zhiyan and asked in a gossipy tone, “How did it go? What did Zhai Shiyu have to say to you?”

“Not much,” Cheng Zhiyan replied nonchalantly.

“How can that be? She had to have asked you whether or not you had any interest in her at the very least.” Xia Feng stared at him incredulously, then he bumped his shoulder against his and asked in a mischievous tone, “So, how did you answer her?”

“…” Cheng Zhiyan paused in his window-cleaning and fell silent for a moment. He then turned around to look Xia Feng straight in his eyes as he spit out word by word, “Sorry, no interest.”

“Huh?” Xia Feng was absolutely caught off guard.
