Chapter 17: Cooking Together

To Chaucer, marrying Mila was just to repay the Old Mr. Sullivan for saving his grandfather’s life back then. As for whether the two of them could live happily after, that would depend on fate.

“Don’t blame me for not reminding you. You’ll regret it in the future!” Old Mr. Chapman said in resignation.

He had been a leader for decades and had seen countless people. He had watched Mila grow up. She was innocent and kind, but Chaucer always felt that she had ulterior motives.

Not long after Chaucer sat on the sofa, Old Mr. Chapman ordered him to help in the kitchen.

Just as he reached the kitchen door, Chaucer heard Mila humming. He gritted his teeth and said, “Are you very happy to hear Grandpa hit me?”

“How is that possible? My heart aches for you.”

Although Mila said that, her eyes were filled with smiles, and she had no intention of hiding it.

Chaucer snorted. “Grandpa asked me to help you. What can I do?”

“Wash the vegetables.”

Mila sized him up and felt he definitely didn’t cook, so she let him do the easiest work.

Chaucer nodded and walked to the sink to wash the vegetables.

There was water boiling in the electric pot, and Chaucer saw Mila throw a bunch of ingredients into it.

“What are you doing?” Chaucer asked curiously.

Chaucer shook his head. He didn’t know how to cook. Since he was young, there had been chefs and servants at home. He had hardly ever entered the kitchen.

Mila took out the ingredients from the jar and explained patiently, “Dried tangerine peel is the sun-dried skin of oranges. It can help with coughing and calm the lungs. These ingredients are boiled together to make sour plum soup. Before taking the pot off the stove, sprinkle some osmanthus and cool it in the fridge. It’s a necessary summer drink.”

Chaucer listened attentively without the slightest hint of impatience. So, this was how sour plum soup was made.

Soon, Chaucer was done washing the vegetables, but he didn’t go out immediately. Instead, he stood at the side and watched Mila cook.

“Chaucer put the sour plum soup in the fridge. We can drink it after dinner.”

Mila originally wanted to make three dishes tonight, but because Old Mr. Chapman was here, she added two at the last minute.

Soon, the dishes were brought to the table. Old Mr. Chapman sat at one side while Mila and Chaucer sat opposite him.

“Miria, your culinary skills are really amazing! No wonder Sullivan keeps showing off his granddaughter in front of me!”

Old Mr. Chapman smiled lovingly and picked up a mouthful of chicken. The chicken was tender and smooth, and the delicious broth burst out in his mouth. The fragrance of spring onion filled his mouth.

Mila smiled in embarrassment. “Grandpa, it’s not as exaggerated as you say. I’m glad you like it.”

Chaucer also picked up a piece of chicken and chewed it carefully. Grandpa wasn’t exaggerating at all. It was really the best spring onion oil chicken.

“Grandpa, try the steamed fish and sweet and sour pork.” Mila picked some food for Old Mr. Chapman, while Chaucer stared straight at Mila’s hand.

After the three of them finished dinner, Mila took out the cool sour plum soup from the fridge.
