Su Man drove the car to the site of the accident.

Late at night, with nothing but silence around, even the nearby streetlights were out. Apart from the faint glow of a 24-hour convenience store in the distance, the entire area was shrouded in darkness.

The two of them got out of the car to search for the ID card but made no progress.

“Could someone have picked it up?” Su Man sighed, “What a headache…”

Lu Yuwen, still calm and composed, said, “If the hotel won’t let me check in, I can book a homestay instead… It’s already so late. You should head back first. I’ll keep looking for a while on my own.”

There’s no way Su Man could just leave him there alone. Shaking her head, she said, “I’ll stay and help you look.”

At that moment, her phone rang. She answered the call.

Her mother’s voice came through the phone:

“Are you home yet? Get some rest. Remember to bring your dad’s things to the hospital in the morning.”

Su Man glanced at Lu Yuwen and said, “Not yet… Mr. Lu lost his ID, and I’m helping him search for it at the accident site. I’ll head home afterward.”

“What? He lost his ID?” Her mother sounded concerned. “What are you going to do? Without an ID, he won’t be able to check into a hotel. Where’s he going to stay tonight?”

Su Man hesitated and said, “He’s planning to book a homestay…”

“This late at night? It’s not easy to find a homestay at this hour. Manman, just bring Mr. Lu to our house. If the ID can’t be found, forget about it for now. He can get a replacement during the daytime tomorrow. Tell him not to worry.”

Su Man: “Huh?”

“Huh, what?!” Her mother said through the phone, “We have so many rooms at home. It’s not like we can’t host him. Don’t be so shy about it. He’s done a lot to help our family. Inviting him to stay for a few days is just good manners! Got it?”

Su Man looked at Lu Yuwen in a daze…

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to invite him. The thing was, she’d never done something like this before. And with her parents at the hospital, it meant… she’d have to host him herself, which was a bit outside her comfort zone.

Lu Yuwen, having overheard her mom’s words on the phone, noticed Su Man’s hesitation. Being understanding, he said, “There’s no need. If I stay over, it might be inconvenient for you. Besides, having a man and a woman staying in the same house might make your parents worry.”

She let out another “Huh.”

From her expression, she seemed to have completely missed the potential awkwardness of them staying under the same roof. Then again, her family likely hadn’t considered it either.

This thought crossed Lu Yuwen’s mind briefly, and he quickly came to a conclusion: with a daughter who’s as capable and strong as she is, they probably don’t need to worry.

Su Man explained hurriedly, “No, no, Mr. Lu, my family and I absolutely trust your character. Please don’t misunderstand. Inviting you to stay at my house is genuinely a way of saying thank you…”

Lu Yuwen quietly listened to her.

She looked up at the sky, hesitating as she continued, “And, you see, it’s so late now… Whether it’s finding a ride or booking a homestay, it’s all pretty troublesome. If you’re willing to stay at my house, my parents would definitely be happy… I-I’d be happy too, to be able to help you out.”

After finishing her words, Su Man stared at him with her bright, shining eyes, waiting for his response.

Lu Yuwen thought for a moment, the corners of his lips lifting into a gentle smile. “Alright then… I’ll take you up on your offer.”

Su Man immediately felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. If she had let him go book a homestay, her mom probably would’ve scolded her to no end!

Of course, she herself also genuinely wanted to help Lu Yuwen. After all, he had helped her dad, too.

Su Man started the car. “Hm?”

“Using my full name sounds a bit formal,” Lu Yuwen said. “Just call me Yuwen.”

Two simple syllables passed through her lips, a perfectly normal way to address someone. Yet for some reason, she felt a faint sense of shyness.
