“Mom!” Su Man was completely speechless. “I have to go to the research institute to meet Li Li tomorrow!”

Su’s mom froze for a moment, then glared at her harshly. “Your dad is in this condition and you still have the nerve to go see Li Li? Isn’t it just some award ceremony over there? It’s not something urgent!”

Su Man was at a loss for words.

Her dad was injured and lying in a hospital bed. Logically speaking, she shouldn’t be running around outside. But asking her to accompany a man she had never met to go shopping–was that somehow reasonable???

Still, with Lu Yuwen right in front of her, she couldn’t openly protest. That would be too awkward.

After all, he was her father’s lifesaver. She should be thanking him profusely, not embarrassing him–right?

Su Man understood proper manners, so she simply pursed her lips to show her displeasure and refrained from continuing to argue with her mother.

Lu Yuwen smiled and said, “No need to trouble yourself, Miss Su. I’m just here in Shanghai temporarily and don’t have any specific plans. I’ll just wander around for now, and if I need anything, I’ll be sure to let you know.”

Su’s mom responded enthusiastically, “Alright, alright, no need to be so polite with us. Once Old Su is discharged, we’ll personally thank you again.”

In her heart, Su Man grumbled: back and forth with all the pleasantries–can this just end already?

Perhaps sensing her impatience, Lu Yuwen tactfully said, “It’s getting late, you should rest early. I’ll take my leave.”

Su’s mom glanced at the clock. It was already past midnight, so it didn’t seem suitable to ask Lu Yuwen to stay longer. She immediately chimed in, “Manman, go and see Mr. Lu out.”

Su Man: “Okay.”

Then she went to escort Lu Yuwen out.

After the two of them left, Su’s mom began tidying up. When she received Lu Yuwen’s call earlier, she had hurriedly prepared some basic items for the hospital stay. Now that she carefully sorted through them, she realized many things were still missing.

Toothbrush, cup, towel, slippers…

The supermarket downstairs at the hospital sold these items, but it just didn’t compare to the comfort of using things brought from home.

“I’ll stay here tonight. Tomorrow I’ll have Su Man go back and fetch the rest of the stuff,” Su’s mom muttered while tidying up. “You’ll have to stay here for at least a month. It’s the perfect opportunity to quit smoking. How many times have I told you, with your heart condition, you can’t smoke? But you never listen. And now look what happened–something bad finally did!”

Su’s dad sighed, “I’ve smoked my entire life; it’s not that easy to quit…”

“You always have so many excuses! Old Li doesn’t smoke, and Li Li doesn’t either!” Su’s mom paused for a moment and then added, “Judging by that Mr. Lu earlier, he doesn’t seem like the type who smokes either. This time you really lucked out! You ended up meeting a good person. Otherwise, lying on the road in the middle of the night–tell me, who would bother to help? And if another car came by…”

With those thoughts in mind, Su’s mom’s expression changed slightly, and she quickly said “pah-pah” twice to ward off bad luck.

Su’s dad had indeed narrowly escaped a disaster. Feeling frightened as well, he lay on the hospital bed with his eyes closed and said slowly, “It really was fortunate this time…”

Su’s mom thought for a moment and said, “I don’t know what he does for a living, but he seems young and promising. His demeanor and conversation were pretty good too. If something could develop between him and Manman, it might not be a bad match.”

Su’s dad froze and immediately opened his eyes.

While he did admire Lu Yuwen, it didn’t mean he would start matchmaking with the very first man he encountered.

“Aren’t you getting a bit ahead of yourself?”

Su’s mom gave a smug little smile and shot him a side glance. “Ahead of myself? Clearly, you didn’t see the way he looked at Manman earlier in the hallway. Tsk, he almost got punched but wasn’t even angry. And then the way he stared at our daughter–totally captivated. If that’s not interest, then what is? Anyway, I think there’s potential between those two.”

“What kind of nonsense is this?” Su’s dad frowned. “If a random woman suddenly hit me, I’d be dumbfounded too! And besides, you know exactly how Manman feels about that Li kid from the Li Family. Ten years of emotions–and you’re going to mess things up? You’ll hurt both of them.”

“I was just saying. How could I possibly mess things up?” Su’s mom shot back irritably.
