As Yao Jie started an IV for the woman, she glanced at the infant beside her and said to the doctor, “I don’t think we can administer an IV to this child.” She also called Wengui over to help hold the IV fluid bags.

When the doctor put him to work, the bewildered Wengui perked up.

Yao Jie, as she administered the IV to Wengui’s mother, fretted about the fluid situation for the child. She wasn’t a professional pediatric nurse, so she lacked experience. Moreover, the child’s shock appeared more severe than the adult’s, and although she looked uninjured externally, she probably suffered serious internal bleeding. Children’s peripheral blood vessels are harder to find than adults’, making it incredibly challenging to locate one in this child.
