1006  Chapter 1006: At Most, Consider It a Joke

“No more gambling, huh? If you’re not gambling, why are you so annoyed,” Le Yu said mockingly as he snatched the fruit back. “Uncle, have some with me.”

He peeled an orange and handed half to Mr. Che. “Uncle, give Che Qin a call. She’s all alone at home stewing in her own juice, and I’m worried about her, but she won’t answer my calls.”

Mr. Che was choking with anger, feeling that his daughter should be able to deal with such a shameless person. “Why did you two start arguing?”

Le Yu stopped eating the orange, sized up Mr. Che for a while, then slowly started to speak, “Our couple’s matters, why are you sticking your nose in.”

If he told Mr. Che that he had been pretending before and now he wanted to go back to take over the family business, wouldn’t that be exactly what he wanted? Le Yu knew all too well how greedy this man was. Once he said it out loud, he estimated Mr. Che would immediately hand Che Qin over to him.

He did want Che Qin, but he didn’t want to mix in any sort of benefit, let alone have Mr. Che speak on his behalf—otherwise, everything would be tainted.

It was his own fault after all, and he should bear the consequences himself.

Mr. Che had been waiting just for Le Yu to say that and exploded, “It would be for the best if Che Qin never married you, otherwise just wait, with your attitude, I’ll make sure you suffer eventually!”

Le Yu wasn’t threatened in the slightest, “I’m not the one marrying into your family, why should I care about your opinion?”

Everyone says that having a daughter is like having a hundred suitors, but Mr. Che had never seen someone who was seeking his daughter’s hand with such an arrogant attitude. His nose was practically bent out of shape with irritation.

Their quarreling finally caused the tightly shut door to open.

Le Yu immediately stood up.

Che Qin, with her eyes red from crying, stood at the door looking at her father. Her voice was rough after sobbing, “Dad, come in.”

Le Yu tried to follow but was stopped by the door slamming shut in his face.

He dejectedly ruffled his hair.

Inside, father and daughter faced each other without saying a word.

After sitting in silence for a while, Mr. Che said, “I came to bring you some fruit, and also, I’ve stopped gambling. I haven’t been to any gambling places in months. From now on, you don’t need to give me money. Dad can earn it.”

Che Qin thought of the red fruit bag by Le Yu’s side and replied, “Mm.”

Mr. Che really didn’t know what to say; the relationship between the two was incredibly strained. Every time he brought fresh fruit, it was an attempt to see Che Qin and hopefully mend their relationship a bit.

His daughter’s “rebellion” took him by surprise, but when he was caught in a trap and lost everything, penniless, and when he was so down and out he didn’t know what tomorrow would bring—that’s when she came back and even agreed to support him.

“Are you having a conflict?” Mr. Che saw her swollen eyes and found a topic to broach, “Can’t let go of him?”

Che Qin didn’t respond.

“He doesn’t even have two coins to rub together, still acts like a spoiled rich kid. It’s simple, just dump him,” Mr. Che said. “Your work environment is pretty good. You could move on and find someone new.”

“Yeah, many of the people who come to the gallery to buy paintings are rich,” Che Qin went along with his thoughts. “I’m thinking now, it’d be great if Le Yu were just pretending to be poor. Then we wouldn’t have to count every penny; it’d be so much more relaxing.”

Mr. Che, considering himself experienced and knowledgeable, added, “I actually hope he’s pretending to be poor. If he is, money can solve anything, and you two wouldn’t have to fight.”

“Why would it be okay if it’s just pretending? Pretending from rich to poor, isn’t that still deception?” Che Qin said sadly. “It’s still a lie.”

Mr. Che disagreed, “It’s not deception if a man isn’t pretending to have money to trick you. Pretending to be poor can hardly count as deception. Stop being so sentimental, it’s at most a joke.”

“What’s wrong with him having money?” Mr. Che felt the problem wasn’t serious, “If your partner is rich, then you’re rich too. No need to work for others, and even I could benefit from it, rubbing elbows with the rich. Playing a game of pretending to be poor, what’s the big deal in that.”
