Chapter 326: Chapter 325 Destroying the Virtual World
“Yes, use Virtual World Technology to kill Digital Life!”
This idea was not impossible!
The Pangu Brain, as the most confidential research project of the new civilization, had to be isolated from the external network. Moreover, all biological computers used a completely different architectural mechanism…
After reaching a fork in the road, the two groups quickly split ways.
Zhang Yuan said, “The robot calibration over there is up to you. We definitely can’t hold with just soldiers; we still need military robots.”
“Understood, don’t worry,” Li Zhendong responded, rushing off with a group of Information Science experts toward the storage warehouse for the military robots.
He felt a bit more confident upon seeing a large group of military robots that had not been infected.
“Great, there are still so many.”
They had almost sprinted over here, and many professors around him were panting heavily, wiping the sweat from their faces.
There were six-legged spider-type robots, tracked robots, and even jet-propelled mini drones– a whole variety of them, equipped with miniature Laser Weapons. Some of the larger models were equipped with kinetic weapons.
Once produced, military robots, after being tested, would be stored in warehouses, ready for emergency use. It was lucky that this large batch of robots, all being in the shutdown state, managed to avoid being infected by the Millennium Bug Virus.
But under current circumstances, these fellows simply could not be taken out for direct use.
Once connected to the local network, the robots would immediately be infected by the virus and paralyzed. Therefore, they could only be manually switched to standalone mode, preventing external communication to be of any use.
One of the experts nearby said, “Professor Li, in standalone mode, these robots can no longer rely on the central supercomputer or the spaceship’s reconnaissance equipment for assistance. Relying only on their built-in infrared detection, their performance is much reduced. The scattered power of individuals is far from competing with a team that can communicate with each other.”
Li Zhendong sighed, “Ah, Professor Donald, having lower performance is still better than having none. Even if they’re used as cannon fodder to buy some time, it’s worth it… don’t feel too bad about it…”
“Let’s get to work, everyone! Every one we modify is one more step towards victory!”
“Understood!” All the scientists shouted in unison.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yuan had already reached the zero-gravity area–where the Pangu Brain was stored.
As the last pure land of Kunlun Mountain, many experts here were busy adjusting the final parameters and studying the specific properties of the Digital Virus.
Although the overall atmosphere seemed calm, upon Zhang Yuan’s arrival, many people breathed a sigh of relief, almost instinctively feeling a sense of reassurance.
Zhang Yuan was essentially the mainstay of the entire team. Without Zhang Yuan’s orders, no one dared to experiment with the Pangu Brain!
This was the Pangu Brain, after all. If you weren’t core personnel, you would have no clue what it really did–just that it was a supercomputer…
But the so-called ‘Class S’ secret was no joking matter. If you tried to peek into the secret out of curiosity, you’d be thrown straight into prison!
The Pangu Brain, operating massive Virtual Worlds, including 200 million Glizerians, over 1600 Human subjects, and a large number of consciousness entities born thereafter.
Especially as the 14th Virtual World community was entirely built from the memories of a vast number of lives by intelligent algorithms. If it were destroyed, there would be no way to restore it.
Moreover, whether Virtual World Technology could actually combat the Digital Virus was another matter altogether…
At that moment, Zhang Yuan’s heart began to hesitate. He felt a heavy weight on his shoulders.
“Professor Yamamoto, has the antivirus software still not been developed yet? Is it possible to extract a small portion of the computers to attempt this, without involving the Pangu Brain itself…”
“Captain, we need computational power, a very large amount of computational power. A small portion of computers simply won’t cut it… Virtual World Technology can indeed resist for a short while, but if there’s little computational power and the rules are simple, it will be easily breached,” replied Professor Yamamoto quickly: “The important thing isn’t about killing the Digital Life…”
“Killing these Digital Lives is actually very easy, just cut the power, or even just a significant voltage change can also lead to their mass death.”
“But killing a small amount of Digital viruses is meaningless! Because their reproduction abilities are just too strong. As long as there are Digital Lives remaining elsewhere, they will steadfastly migrate here and then keep proliferating madly until all the computational power is occupied!”
“They especially like places with high computational power as it’s in line with their biological tendencies.”
“I know that,” Zhang Yuan frowned, “We must kill all the Digital viruses in one go…”
But how could that be achieved?
Kunlun Mountain was just too big, the size of a mid-sized city.
As long as there was any device in this city normally turned on, whether it was equipped with a backup power source or with a battery, as long as one device was left on, the Digital viruses, if not exterminated in one go, would come back with a vengeance.
It was simply impossible to inspect all devices now!
Even if we truly wanted to accomplish that, who knows how much manpower and resources it would take, and in the face of a powerful enemy, where would there be so much time?
“Is it possible to use Digital Life to fight Digital Life?” Zhang Yuan suddenly asked, “For example, the Glizerians, or if it really comes down to it, humans could as well.”
Another professor quickly shook his head, “No, absolutely not. First, it has never been tested… Even if the Digital Lives within the Pangu Brain could kill these viruses, we still should not use this method.”
“Captain, the Digital Lives in the Pangu Brain are very fragile, they die easily outside of the Virtual World environment. For instance, the Glizerians’ self-awareness can survive in the Pangu Brain, but if transferred to the central supercomputer, without the appropriate environment, they would immediately die. Complex Digital Life requires much more from the virtual environment, not like these viruses that can survive on just a bit of computational power.”
Zhang Yuan also sighed, he was just casually asking, without expecting much.
Human understanding of Digital Life is still very superficial, using Digital Life to fight Digital Life is nothing but a fantasy!
So, the best plan people came up with was to connect the Pangu Brain to the invaded external network and draw in the Digital viruses!
“The computational power of the Pangu Brain is truly astounding, even countless times higher than the central supercomputing of Kunlun Mountain!”
Professor Yamamoto excitedly presented his plan, “Under this circumstance, once we connect the entire Pangu Brain to the external network. Those Digital viruses will rush over like hungry wolves to a bone, which will give us the opportunity to catch them all in one fell swoop. Yes, we must connect the entire Pangu Brain, only immense computational power will crazily attract those Digital viruses.”
Zhang Yuan frowned, “Are you saying, after catching all these Digital viruses in one net, we should destroy the Virtual World inside the Pangu Brain?”
“Yes, that’s right… once the Virtual World is destroyed, the Digital Lives inside will naturally all die.”
Zhang Yuan was silent for a while, then shook his head again, “No!”
“Let’s not even talk about what the operation of the Virtual Worlds within the Pangu Brain means to humanity. If these Digital Lives proliferate madly within the Virtual World, and penetrate into other Virtual Worlds, wouldn’t that contaminate all the Virtual Worlds? If we don’t catch them all and a few Digital viruses are left outside, they will still grow crazily again! All our efforts would be wasted…”
These issues were not impossible to occur!
Humans knew too little about this type of Digital viruses, there simply wasn’t much confidence to completely tackle them.
