Chapter 25: The trail ends

Chris thought his answer would let him off. He did not expect me to see through his lie so easily. Cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
Ken, who was watching from the side, quietly observed the entire conversation. He had a new understanding of my ability to recognize people who lied.
Chris said, “Well, your mother went to the office because she fought with me.”
I nodded. “Why did you fight? Did you hit her?”
Chris knew he could not lie to me, so he did not lie anymore. However, he still said in a hypocritical tone, “I was too impulsive because she said she would give you the Radiant Foundation and the Flying Bird. I was only worried that you were too young to do the job, so I persuaded her.”
There was distrust in my eyes. “Why did Grace get the Radiant Foundation?”
There was a trace of panic in Chris’ eyes. “She was older and more sensible than you, so she was more suited to be in charge of new products.”
I shook my head and exposed him. “It was because your heart was already with Grace’s mother. You wanted to start a family with them for a long time, so you took everything from my mother. You also wanted me to disappear!”
Chris was speechless and did not reply.
I could not help it and closed my eyes the moment I turned around. I was filled with disappointment.
I thought that after I made Chris compromise, I would be able to make progress in finding my mother. However, this time, it was all for naught.
As I walked out of the ballroom, I noticed that it was also raining.
The red dress stuck to my body, and my makeup was ruined.
Ken followed me silently, like the safest umbrella around me.
He unbuttoned his oversized, tailored jacket and draped it over me to shield me from the cold.
He did the same thing on the rainy night we met and it warmed my heart.

Ken cupped my cold cheek and caressed it with heartache. “How could you cry so easily? This wasn’t the Elena I knew.”
I wiped my eyes. The tears mixed with the rain were gently wiped away with Ken’s soft silk handkerchief. He said to me, “The Elena I knew would do her best to recover even if she fell to the ground. If she was even scolded by her family at a party, she would be reasonable.”
His words reignited my fighting spirit. I broke into a smile. “It turned out that I was strong in your eyes. Don’t worry. I wouldn’t give up!”
Since I would be spending the rest of my life in this comic book, no matter what, I would carry on with my initial wish and mission even if I had to search for a year or ten years.
Ken lovingly pinched my chin as he saw the smile on my face once again. “Don’t be sad. I would definitely accompany you to find your mother.”
After he finished speaking, he kissed me.
Our lips were pressed together, and the cold, rainy night gave me a reassuring warmth.
His kiss was so gentle and soothing that I did not want to say no. I hugged his waist instead.
Ken’s eyes flashed with a smile when he sensed my initiative, and our kiss deepened.
The two of us kissed so romantically at the hall entrance that even the occasional passers-by could not help it but felt envious.
