After a long while, Howard Coleman finally spoke, his voice was so flat that it was almost devoid of any emotion, “He… is he treating you well?”

Andrew Henris was really good to her, impeccably so. Even though she had just lied, now, she was very sincere in saying, “He’s very nice, and treats me well. During those years in Oceania, he took great care of me.”

She paused, then pointing to the takeout on the table, continued, “Very accommodating of me, and he even said that for me, he would give up his career in Oceania to come to Ciawell.”

Howard clenched the alcohol glass in his hand, and his empty chest suddenly began to beat rapidly, mingled with a heart-wrenching pain.

She had only uttered a few words, yet they revealed the man’s tenderness and indulgence toward her–a stark contrast to the relentless harm and cruelty he, Howard, had inflicted upon her.

Howard felt a bitterness in his mouth. It took him considerable effort to force out some semblance of a sound, “So, that means you are very happy with him.”

Madeleine did not speak this time.

If she could stop loving him, she thought she might truly find happiness.

Howard didn’t know what else to say. The bright crystal chandelier in the living room shone on his face, rendering it somewhat pale. He lowered his eyelids, clutching the glass tightly in his hand.

Madeleine remained silent too.

The room was so quiet it was frightening, and the atmosphere gradually became awkward.

In the end, Madeleine couldn’t bear it any longer and spoke up, breaking through the awkwardness, “Um, it’s dinner time now, and Andrew Henris just went out of his way to bring me takeout. Do you want to eat something?”

At this, Howard snapped back to reality and glanced briefly at the paper bag on the coffee table, then shook his head and set the glass on the table before getting up in a fluster, “No, I’m not hungry. You go ahead and eat.”

After saying this, Howard quickly added, “I have other matters to attend to, so I must be going.”

“Okay.” Madeleine sat on the couch without getting up, “I won’t see you out.”

“Goodbye.” After saying that, Howard looked at Madeleine for a while, then turned around and walked towards the door.

Madeleine didn’t turn to look at Howard’s figure. She heard the sound of Howard changing shoes in the Foyer Area, and the sound of the door opening and closing. After a long while, she blinked, came back to her senses, looked around the empty room, and finally, her gaze fell on the spot where Howard had just been sitting, lost in a daze.

Even though he had hurt her so much, she still pathetically loved him deeply, and deep down she even thought about blackmailing him into marriage with the events of last night.

Three and a half years ago, she had forced herself to let go, for him to find his happiness. Yet no one knew that as soon as they had got their divorce papers, she regretted it.

On her first day in Oceania, deep down, she had started looking forward to when she could return to Ciawell.

Yet, even though she had come back, she could never again be that Madeleine who dared to love and hate with equal passion.

Because that Madeleine, who once bravely sought happiness, had been slowly and gradually suffocated to death by this man named Howard Coleman.

Howard had no idea how he managed to get out of Madeleine’s house. When he came to his senses, he was already sitting in his car.
