Upon hearing Nianyao’s words, Yi Lin couldn’t help but feel confused. “Earlier, didn’t I–”

“That was compensation.”

Before he could finish, Nianyao interrupted him, continuing with a smile, “Family Head Yi, although I haven’t been here long, I’m not completely ignorant of past events. Over the years, because my mother insisted on breaking off the engagement, the Baili Family, feeling guilty, has given Yi Family quite a few benefits.”

If it weren’t for the current issues plaguing Yi Huai, which only the Baili Family could solve, he would have already stormed out angrily.

“The so-called explanation, naturally, involves dealing with the chief culprit,” Nianyao continued, glancing meaningfully at Yi Huai before speaking again, “Or is it that Family Head Yi is reluctant to deal with this culprit?”

Hearing such an accusation, Yi Lin’s already tenuous control over his emotions was about to break, “Are you forcing me?”

“No, I’m merely discussing facts,” Nianyao gently shook her head, then, as if she had discovered something shocking, covered her mouth in surprise and said, “Or are you saying that the actual reason Family Head Yi is here today is merely to put on an act?”

Baili Hengyuan’s face had already turned unsightly. He stood up and issued an eviction order, “Yi Lin, since you came today without any sincerity, there’s nothing more to discuss. You may leave now! As for justice and explanation, we the Baili Family will take them back ourselves.”

Seeing Baili Hengyuan getting angry, Yi Lin clenched his teeth and eventually spoke, “Brother Baili, this matter is Yi Huai’s fault, and I won’t shield him. Apart from the compensation I just promised, I can also assure you that I will exclude Yi Huai from the ranks of my Yi Family’s heirs. How does that sound?”

“Father!” Yi Huai looked incredulously at Yi Lin.

He had always been remarkably talented and was undeniably the rightful heir to the Yi Family. He had long viewed himself as the future head of the Yi Family.

Yet now, his father had promised the Baili Family that he would never inherit the Yi Family. For him, this was nothing less than shattering all his hopes.

“Just like that?” Nianyao blinked her eyes, seemingly incredulous. “Family Head Yi, aren’t you being too perfunctory? Just kicking Yi Huai out of the heirs, what kind of explanation is that?”

“Then what more do you want?” Yi Lin gritted his teeth, looking at Nianyao, his words tinged with a gritted-teeth sensation. “This is already a significant matter for our Yi Family.”

Nianyao shrugged her shoulders, “It seems there indeed exists a significant gap in our understanding!”

“Yi Lin,” Baili Hengyuan called out his name, indicating his mood had worsened, “If you came today just to put on such a grand performance, then please leave! Our Baili Family’s stage is small, hardly enough to accommodate such an actor.”

With words so unkindly spoken, any self-respecting person should have left promptly.

Yet, Yi Lin was no ordinary individual, he did not leave but continued discussing his willingness to make amends. However, he did not mention what else he planned to do about Yi Huai besides stripping him of the heir status.

Yi Lin stood his ground and made no compromise, creating an especially eerie atmosphere throughout the living room.

Nianyao glanced at Yi Lin, who had no intention to leave, then at Yi Huai still kneeling there, a thoughtful glint crossing her eyes.

“Family Head Yi, speak frankly, there’s no need to waste everyone’s time here,” Nianyao bluntly spoke. “Don’t deny it, your visit today wasn’t solely to apologize, right?”

Hearing Nianyao’s forthright inquiry, Yi Lin’s eyes dodged, yet he remained silent.

“If Family Head Yi is unwilling to speak, then naturally, I won’t force you,” Nianyao coldly glanced at Yi Lin. “However, I’m not really in a position to keep guests here any longer.”

Listening to Nianyao’s glaring eviction order, Yi Huai took a deep breath and then looked towards Nianyao, saying, “Is it you who tampered with Yi Huai, making him suffer every day?”

“It was me!” Nianyao didn’t hide anything, replying with a smile, “But I think I have been rather merciful. After all, I wasn’t planning to let Yi Huai die and go to the Netherworld.”

“You–”

“What kind of mercy is this? Do you even know how miserable he is every day–”

“I do!” Nianyao nodded, her smile carrying a deeper significance. “If he wasn’t tormented, why would I go through the trouble of creating such a commotion?”

“You did it on purpose?” Yi Lin was infuriated to the point of itching teeth.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Nianyao looked at Yi Lin with a quasi-smile. “Isn’t this the very reason for your visit today?”

“You knew?” Yi Lin frowned, his complexion worsening, “So from beginning to end, you’ve been playing me, haven’t you?”

“You’re wrongly accusing me!” Nianyao shrugged her shoulders, a face of innocence, “I guessed right, but you never spoke up! How would I know whether my guess was correct?”

Listening at the side, Baili Hengyuan was utterly confused. “Nianyao, are you saying–”

“Family Head Yi’s visit today wasn’t about an apology or accountability; all he wanted was for us to help relieve Yi Huai’s suffering!” Nianyao, with a smile, slowly made clear Yi Lin’s purpose for the visit. “It seems that even now, the Yi Family still isn’t ready to give up on Yi Huai!”
