Chapter 1249: Chapter 930, Heading to Netalee City
Stay on Gold and Silver Island?
Rostand’s gaze suddenly hardened, and his smile vanished, replaced by seriousness tinged with latent anger. “Do you think clinging to the hero’s coattails will let you replace my twenty years of effort and hard work?”
Gold and Silver Island only became important in the past couple of years; before that, it was just a hub for pirate business.
Back when this Hero Island Master hadn’t yet appeared, Gold and Silver Island’s status was far inferior to the surrounding consortiums.
But now it’s different. Everyone can see the value of Gold and Silver Island.
Besides, I had asked this person to put in a few good words for me, but I didn’t expect it to come to this.
“Please don’t jump to conclusions yet. Hear me out. If I truly meant to harm you, I wouldn’t have come to discuss this matter with you directly.” Retili swirled her wine glass gently, the rose-colored liquid rippling inside.
Rostand stayed silent, watching her with a cold and indifferent gaze.
He had spent so many years building up Gold and Silver Island that, if pushed to the brink, he could always ensure this beautiful elf experienced some “minor mishaps” on her way back.
“Speak!” Rostand, nonetheless, was curious to hear what she had to say.
Retili took a sip of wine before starting, “Mr. Rostand, despite how long you’ve managed Gold and Silver Island, the island’s performance hasn’t been particularly remarkable. Of course, that’s not your fault–it’s an issue inherited from the past.”
“Achieving a breakthrough for the performance of the local consortium will be very difficult. You must be aware of that.”
“The development of Gold and Silver Island has been too fast. All the consortium leaders see its value. After today, who knows how many people are now eyeing your position.”
Rostand’s eyes narrowed as his peripheral vision caught several representatives nearby, many of whom were stealing glances in his direction.
“That’s just your speculation.”
“Whether or not it’s speculation, you and I both know the truth. In the consortium, everything is based on performance. If you’re so reluctant to let go of this position, I’ve already spoken to Island Master Wu Heng on your behalf. He said he wouldn’t take this matter to heart,” Retili added. “This isn’t a threat–I truly put in a word for you before I decided to stay.”
Rostand furrowed his brow, staring at her. Then, suddenly, he smiled and shrugged. “If the consortium decides to reassign me, there’s nothing I can do. In the end, whoever can take this position will depend on your skills.”
Retili tapped her gilded fingernail on the edge of the table. She slid a consortium deposit slip across the tabletop. “One thousand gold coins–for you to make an honorable exit.”
A thousand gold!
Rostand’s gaze shifted instantly.
Consortium leaders made decent money, but very few could pull together such an amount.
“Do you have to go this far? It’s not even certain yet if you’ll be sent to Gold and Silver Island!” Rostand’s tone carried some surprise.
Retili smiled. “I’m taking a gamble. What other choice do I have? The money isn’t a free gift. I also need you to write a letter to the higher-ups recommending me for the position.”
Rostand glanced at her, then at the deposit slip in front of him.
After contemplating for a moment, he finally said, “Take the slip back for now. I need to think about it. I’ll give you my answer tomorrow morning.”
“Alright!” Retili nodded.
Rostand waved her off. “I’d like some peace and quiet. Miss Retili, perhaps you should chat with someone else.”
Retili wasn’t offended. She rose and walked toward another part of the room.
…
Zombie World, surveillance room.
Wu Heng and a ghost were walking back, followed by four Level 20 Skeletons with wings.
They were: ‘Shanshan,’ a Level 20 Unicorn Immortal Skeleton; ‘Tiao Tiao,’ a Level 20 Spirit Corpse Thief; ‘No.2 Pot Lid,’ a Level 20 Spirit Corpse Warrior; and ‘Sandbag Boxing,’ a Level 20 Spirit Corpse Boxer.
After returning to the surveillance room,
Wu Heng took out some equipment from two professions and had the newly converted skeletons put them on.
“Will you have them with you all the time?” Glenda asked from the side.
Wu Heng replied, “I plan to assign them to protect others close to me. Keeping them all with me would be inefficient.”
After all, he was a hero, already surrounded by three Level 20 ghosts and two Level 20 skeletons.
Adding two more skeletons wouldn’t significantly increase his own protection.
But since enemies couldn’t directly target him, he needed to guard against them targeting the people around him instead.
“That works. There are plenty of Level 19 zombies in the prison. You could assign one to each person later, and it’d still be enough,” Bella chimed in.
Wu Heng nodded with a smile, signaling his agreement with her reasoning.
After the skeletons finished equipping themselves, he had the ghosts return to his body, then opened the boundary door and walked through.
…
Gold and Silver Island.
Wu Heng descended the stairs with two skeletons in tow. In the living room, several women were chatting while waiting for the Skeleton Chef to serve dinner.
All logistical tasks in the Island Lord’s Mansion were performed by skeletons.
Even dinner was better made by the Skeleton Chef, with more flavors and variety.
When Wu Heng came downstairs, several pairs of eyes turned to look at him, then gazed past him to inspect the additional skeletons he had brought along.
Wu Heng scanned the group in the room and spoke. “Shanaela, I’ve arranged for a skeleton attendant to protect you from now on.”
Shanaela was responsible for selecting and renovating the site for the church.
Wu Heng worried that someone might attempt to sabotage the church’s construction and target Shanaela in the process. Since there were new skeletons available, he decided to assign one to her.
Shanaela raised an eyebrow. “Having a skeleton with me every day–won’t that create a bad impression?”
The Sixth Elder of the Wood Elves also wanted to avoid any more scandalous rumors about her and Wu Heng spreading on the island.
Although there were already countless versions of their rumors making the rounds.
“A hooded cloak will do. It shouldn’t be much of an issue. Most professionals won’t even notice,” Wu Heng replied.
