Chapter 16: Determined

I brushed my hair back. I used to think that long hair looked good, and Abraham loved it, but now, it’s just a burden. I had to take time to wash and dry it. It was troublesome.

I tucked my hair behind my ear and considered what to say to Mylo. “I’m not on the streets. I’m not looking for anyone along the streets. Mylo, I want you to swear that you’re not going to tell my parents this.”

“I swear,” he said without hesitation.

“I resigned and joined the Hall Corporation.”

A deathly silence came from his side.

“Mylo?” I shouted.

After a while, he said worriedly, “Although I don’t know what the Hall Corporation is up to, it’s really not simple. It’s very dangerous for you to go in like this.”

“I know, but the eight missing people are all from the Hall Corporation. I really can’t just ignore this matter.”

“Are you in the Hall Corporation now? Are there people around you?”

After hearing his reminder, I realized that even though no one had stepped forward to stop the sex scene, it didn’t mean that there was no one else in the toilet.

I quickly got up and started to push the toilet doors open one by one. When the last door was pushed open, I heaved a sigh of relief. “No one.”

Mylo’s concern only intensified. “We need to talk.”

“Listen to me, Mylo. Just pretend that you don’t know about this. You’ve already spent a lot of time and effort to find Abraham. This is my business. I don’t want to implicate you.”

“There are many ways to find him. Why must you choose such a dangerous method?”

“I’m tired of searching the streets and alleys. I’m exhausted, and yet I don’t have any leads. I’m tired of pinning my hopes on someone else. Even the police are powerless, so who can help me?” I suppressed my voice, but I couldn’t control my emotions. “Mylo, you don’t have to worry about this. I’ll go home later. Please don’t tell my parents about this.”

With that, I hung up before Mylo could respond.

Just then, someone came into the bathroom. Seeing that I didn’t look too good, she asked if I was okay. I shook my head and left the bathroom.

I went back to the small room to search through the files, but I didn’t find any useful clues. Around nine o’ clock, Selina sent me a message asking when I was going home, so I went home first.

When I got back, Selina made me some supper and I took the opportunity to tell her I might be working overtime for the next few days.

Selina was worried about me. “Are you okay?”

“Of course. I’m sure I can hang in there while we wait for the police to find out what’s going on. I just want to get back to work and live my life so that when Abraham comes back, I’ll still be the same as before.”

Selina nodded satisfactorily.

I realized something was wrong at home. It took me a moment to realize that Jeffrey wasn’t there. I wanted to ask Selina where Jeffrey had gone, but she didn’t seem to have any intention of mentioning it to me, so I called Jeffrey privately.

Jeffrey was delighted to hear my voice. “Oh, God, my baby girl is still the best. I was kicked out by your mom. She was chanting some kind of spell at home today, and she made a mess. I just said one word to her and she kicked me out.”

“Then what are you going to do, Dad?”

“I’m currently at a friend’s house in Elsingborg. I have some business to take care of here. I’ll probably be staying for a while. You can look for me anytime.”

“Okay, Dad.” I was silent for a moment. “Thank you, Dad.”

He was pleasantly surprised. “Oh, you’re welcome. I’ve got some friends at the police station. I’ll keep in contact with them.”

“Okay.”

“Rest early.”

After hanging up, I couldn’t help but sigh heavily. Everyone was silently caring for me in different ways. It made me even more desperate to find Abraham.

The next day, when I arrived at the Hall Corporation, Edwin assigned me a task. He wanted me to help him make an exquisite PowerPoint presentation for his next itinerary. The task wasn’t that difficult. I did it for him in an extremely short amount of time, but I didn’t send it to him. I could buy myself more time to investigate.

I stepped into the elevator and reached the 18th floor. The doors opened and I saw an empty concrete space, possibly around twenty square feet. Behind that was an office with locked doors.

Seeing that there was no one around, I walked to the office door. It was made of glass, and the lower half of it was clear. I looked inside. The decor was simple and clean. No one was there.

I looked around for the location of the surveillance cameras, but to my astonishment, there was nothing here that looked like a camera.

Suddenly, I heard a rumbling explosion. Something flew out from the left. I turned around and something seemed to have blown up.

I quickly opened the emergency exit and left the scene, returning to my own small room. The noise was so loud, someone would definitely rush to the 18th floor. If they found me there, I would have trouble explaining myself then.
