Chapter 755: Chapter 755: Abigail Starts to Have Doubts
Abigail got off the plane and turned on her phone, immediately receiving two messages from Brandon Piers.
The first message asked if she had arrived safely. The second one told her not to miss him too much.
Abigail read the messages, a slight smile forming on her lips. After a moment of thought, she responded, “Okay, I won’t miss you.”
Based on her understanding of him, she knew he genuinely wanted her to focus on the competition, but the part about not missing him was definitely not true.
After sending the message, Abigail followed her teammates to the car.
Besides Hughes, Brandon had secretly sent many people to protect her, so a large group left the airport together.
Busy with the competition, Abigail had no time or mind to think about Brandon. She threw herself wholeheartedly into the competition.
It was only during occasional breaks that she noticed her phone was unusually quiet with no messages from Brandon.
However, preoccupied with the competition, Abigail dismissed it, thinking Brandon didn’t want to disturb her.
But after a week of intense competition, when she and her teammates won the championship and even Headmaster Theodore came from afar to congratulate them, Abigail finally felt something was off when Brandon was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s Brandon?” After coming off the podium and dealing with the media, Abigail asked Hughes the first thing.
Hughes, still relishing in Abigail’s brilliance on stage, was slow to react when he heard her question. He looked at Abigail for a while before replying, hesitantly, “Well… Brandon… How should I know?”
This seemingly confident yet unconvincing response left Abigail in a daze. She immediately sensed Hughes was feeling guilty. “What happened to him?”
Hughes, though generally taciturn, always answered her questions. Even if he didn’t know something, he would quickly find out and give her the best answer. But his recent “How should I know?” clearly carried a cover-up tone.
“What do you mean something happened? I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Feeling even more guilty, Hughes pointed behind Abigail, “Headmaster Theodore is looking for you.”
Seeing Hughes’s reaction, Abigail was more convinced something had happened to Brandon. But what could make Hughes so evasive? For some reason, Abigail thought of the rumors about Brandon marrying Bertha Swift on July 21st. With the date approaching, could it be he finally decided to marry her?
Abigail immediately shook off this thought. Since the media had already revealed Adam Piers and Bertha Swift’s affair, and Piers’s official Twitter confirmed it, there should be no further changes. So what could it be?
She thought of Joshua Piers and his occasionally gloomy, occasionally frosty slanted eyes. “Hughes, be honest…”
“Abigail, why are you here? Come, everyone is waiting for you to take a group photo.” Without waiting for Hughes’s answer, Headmaster Theodore suddenly appeared behind Abigail, pulling her away.
Watching this, Hughes sighed deeply and sent a message to Kelvin Max, “The mistress is suspicious.”
It took a while for a reply to come through, “By all means, keep her from returning to the country in the days ahead.”
Staring at the message, Hughes’s handsome young face wore a helpless expression. How was he supposed to delay? He couldn’t even withstand her probing eyes.
But when he asked further, Kelvin Max did not reply.
Hughes knew the Piers family turmoil was currently chaotic. Though Kelvin Max wasn’t personally restricted like Brandon, many things couldn’t be handled as freely as before. He had no choice but to accept this task reluctantly.
After finishing the photo and other procedures, it was already 6 PM. Headmaster Theodore, on behalf of the school, invited all participants to stay in the M State for ten days as an extra reward for winning the competition.
While others cheered, Abigail couldn’t help but glance at Headmaster Theodore a few times.
On the way back to the hotel, Hughes followed Abigail closely, nervously anticipating her questions. To his surprise, Abigail said nothing about Master Brandon until they were back in the hotel room. This both relieved and puzzled Hughes.
But before this confusion could deepen, Hughes, sitting at the computer desk, saw Abigail emerge from her room shortly after entering, wearing a different outfit.
Hughes stood up in shock, notifying the bodyguards while packing up his computer and chasing after her.
Abigail had no intention of sneaking away. Hughes didn’t have much trouble catching up, only to see Abigail stopped by bodyguards just outside the hotel.
To his surprise, Abigail wasn’t panicked. Instead, she gave him a provocative look as if she had been waiting for this interception.
This made Hughes even more anxious. Abandoning the familiar term “Abigail,” he respectfully called, “Mistress, where are you going? It’s not safe to travel at night.”
“Going back home.” Abigail replied with a faint smile on her face.
Only then did Hughes notice the small bag she was carrying, presumably containing her documents.
“Back home? I’ve already discussed with Headmaster Theodore. You’ll return home with everyone in ten days. If you’re bored, we can arrange for you to tour nearby places.” Hughes tried to make his words sound flawless.
“Hughes, how long do you plan to hide it from me?” Abigail, hearing Hughes repeatedly calling her “Mistress,” decided to stop wasting time. Staring into his anxious eyes, she asked directly.
Hughes’s heart skipped a beat. “Hide what? I don’t understand what you mean, Mistress.”
“You’ve been calling me ‘mistress’ yet act like you don’t understand?” Abigail grew more anxious. Preoccupied with the competition earlier, she hadn’t checked her phone. But she tried and found out that she couldn’t get any news from home, and all contact with Lena Locke had ceased since the second day of her arrival in M Kingdom.
Before, she hadn’t questioned it because she occasionally received spam, assuming everyone was too worried about disturbing her competition.
Now she was certain her phone had been tampered with by Hughes, filtering all incoming messages.
Knowing Hughes wouldn’t harm her, the most likely reason was something had happened to Brandon back home, and he didn’t want her to find out.
Seeing Abigail’s stern expression, Hughes was panicked, lacking the composure of a top hacker, and explained in desperation, “Abigail, listen to me. Master Brandon didn’t want you to worry.”
“So you admit something happened to him?” Abigail’s eyes were filled with more evident worry and urgency.
Hughes opened his mouth slightly, realizing he had been tricked. “I…”
“If you don’t tell the truth, I’ll go back home alone. Do you think you can really stop me?” Before Hughes could fabricate more lies, Abigail cut off his escape route.
Helpless, Hughes had no choice but to report the truth.
Abigail’s fair, pretty face grew serious. “You said he’s been detained for seven days? How could this be? Did they find substantial evidence?”
Without tangible evidence, the court wouldn’t detain him for seven days.
Hughes shook his head, “There weren’t many details. They just told you not to return for now.”
Abigail’s face turned grim. If Brandon’s situation weren’t critical, they wouldn’t discourage her from returning. But knowing this, how could she not go back?
