Chapter 57: Tit For Tat (I)

It seemed that she would always be in some pathetic state every time he met her.

It was depressing.

Wushuang blinked, and a tear rolled down the side of her face. She recovered her senses and quickly broke free of his grasp. After she straightened up, Wushuang wiped off the lone tear with the back of her hand. She was not crying; it was purely a physiological reaction as she was hit on the nose.

Wushuang felt that their Bazi[1] truly were a mismatch. Some sort of injury always befell her every time they met.

“Why are you still here this late?” His brows furrowed all the more when he saw her shed a tear. His voice was as cold as this particular night of early spring.

This was such a rhetorical question as if she was here for supper. “Mister Mu, I’m obviously working overtime.”

After she retreated to a safe distance, Wushuang reverted to her usual calm and collected self.

“Aren’t you supposed to be recuperating in the hospital?” Aunt Wu had jovially prepared all sorts of nutritious foods every day and would occasionally mention her to him. Mu Yuhao had also been very focused on his job the past few days and never once brought up Wushuang. It was due to these things that Mu Jinchen had thought she was still in the hospital.

Wushuang did not want to stay too long in his presence. No matter how she tried to ignore it, the aura this man exuded was too intense. “Thank you for your concern, Mister Mu. I feel much better now. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must be leaving. Goodbye.”

After speaking, Wushuang hopped over on one leg to the lounge area in the lobby.

It was not the first time that she deliberately alienated him. He had always been at the top; many fawned and flattered over him. However, it was the first time someone had avoided him like he was some great scourge. His expression grew grave and stern and showed a little displeasure.

Qidong was already waiting with the car, a little further down the driveway.

Mu Jinchen’s gaze never left Jing Wushuang as she sat on the sofa and rubbed her foot. She would frequently glance at her phone with an annoyed look on her face. He thought of just walking away to avoid any more problems.

His legs reacted faster than his brain. When he reached Jing Wushuang, his mind stopped functioning for a second and his words did not filter through his brain.

“I’ll send you home.”

Wushuang raised her head and stared up at the tall silhouette that eclipsed the light, and it obscured his face from her. She thought that he had left. Men like him do not like to be rejected. She thought that her ‘goodbye’ sent a clear sign, yet he still came over. This was not something she thought he would do.

She lowered her eyes in silence, gave it a thought, and then looked up at him again. Her voice was soft but a little distant as she replied, “Thank you for your kindness, Mister Mu. My friend will be here in a minute. You can continue on your way.”

She had no intention of crossing paths too often with him. These inexplicable encounters the past few days had been enough. If it could be avoided, she would avoid them as much as possible. She was not a naive girl who knew nothing about the world. A person might treat someone nicely for no reason, but that person was not a man like Mu Jinchen.

“Miss Jing, please don’t insult my IQ. Also, you don’t have to worry if I have ulterior motives. There’s nothing about you that is worth my attention.”

These simple words were uttered from Mu Jinchen’s thin lips. His flat tone was laced with a hint of coldness, but there was no arrogant undertone to it; he merely stated a fact. Usually, he was the one being paid attention to. Wushuang, for one, was not worth his attention.

[1] Bazi (八字) are the eight characters of one’s birthdate used in fortune-telling.
