Chapter 357: 357 Rescue
Chen Xu and Liu Xiaoshang lived in the same direction, so he dropped him off first before heading to his own place.
He got home early, before ten o’clock.
He took a shower, wrapped himself in a bathrobe, and sat in the chaise lounge by the window, feeling completely sober. During the hotpot meal with Liu Xiaoshang, he had been in a particularly relaxed mood and drank quite a bit.
Ding-dong–
After sitting for a while, his phone suddenly rang with a video call from Bai Jinxuan.
He answered, and her face appeared on the screen. She wasn’t wearing makeup, prompting him to ask, “Don’t you have work today?”
“My first concert is next week. I’ve asked Aunt Shao to clear my schedule so I can focus on preparing,” Bai Jinxuan’s voice was a bit hoarse, and she took a sip of water. “I’m practicing right now.”
She panned the camera around the room, which seemed to be a rehearsal studio, brightly lit and crowded with people, including her assistant and some dancers.
Chen Xu could only offer, “Don’t overdo it–make sure you rest well to maintain a good condition.”
“I can’t sleep even if you tell me to; this is the first concert I’m hosting,” Bai Jinxuan whispered into the camera. “It would be nice if you were here.”
Chen Xu replied, “I’ll definitely be there at the concert.”
Bai Jinxuan’s eyes brightened, “You said it yourself, you have to keep your word.”
“Silly, it’s your first concert, it’s a big deal. I have to be there.”
Bai Jinxuan had already given him several tickets, and although she hadn’t said it outright, she clearly hoped he would come.
“Yeah, I really wish the day would come sooner,” she said with anticipation.
Chen Xu smiled, and after a while, he asked, “How are the ticket sales?”
“They were sold out a while ago; don’t underestimate my fans. I heard that even a regular ticket online has been scalped for over a thousand,” Bai Jinxuan said.
Chen Xu laughed, “I know you’re impressive. I’ll bring Ziqi with me. She saw the news about your concert online and has been clamoring to go.”
“Okay,” Bai Jinxuan nodded, and then someone called her from offscreen, and she turned to respond.
“Alright, you should get back to work. Try to sleep early.”
“So should you.”
When they hung up, there was no undue lingering–they met every two days in dreams, where a stay together lasted a year. Such separations were nothing.
He had just put down the phone when it rang again, Secretary Jin calling, and he became curious–why would she call at this hour?
After answering, Secretary Jin’s words made him stand abruptly, his expression serious, “Which hospital? I’ll be right there.”
After hanging up, he changed clothes quickly, grabbed his car keys, and left.
Taking the elevator straight to the underground garage, he headed directly to his Maybach’s parking space–it was the first time he drove this car since purchasing it, as the situation was urgent and there wasn’t time to call a driver.
Secretary Jin had informed him that Secretary Wen had suffered a severe car accident and was currently in emergency treatment at the hospital.
Regardless, Secretary Wen had been by his side for several months. Hearing such news, he felt terrible and had to rush over.
Forty minutes later, Chen Xu arrived at the hospital–Secretary Wen was still in the operating room undergoing emergency treatment, with Secretary Jin and several employees waiting outside.
“What exactly happened?”
He rushed over, and the employees stood up from their seats to greet him.
Secretary Jin was relatively composed, “Around eight o’clock, she was delivering documents to the office and met with the accident on her way home. Someone called 120, and through her mobile phone, they contacted me. That’s how I came to know about it.”
Chen Xu almost cursed but restrained himself, decisively saying, “No matter the cost, she must be saved.”
Secretary Jin responded, “Understood, Mr. Chen.”
“Did you notify her family?”
“They’ve been informed, and are on their way from their hometown.”
“Does she have any other relatives here?”
“Not according to her files.”
…
Chen Xu sat on a chair in the hallway, staring at the ‘Surgery In Progress’ sign endlessly illuminated overhead, feeling heavy-hearted.
Secretary Wen wasn’t very noticeable–she was quiet and reliable in her work. It was evident she had been trying very hard.
When she first arrived, she was just a fresh graduate, not knowing much, but several months later, she hardly made any mistakes anymore and had progressed quickly.
Although she had passed her probation period, she still couldn’t afford a car and drove a company car. Being a new driver who had only recently got her license might be the cause of the accident.
Time ticked by, and he had been sitting for an hour, but the surgery was still not over.
Chen Xu’s mood had calmed considerably by now–things had happened, and overthinking was useless. Whether Secretary Wen could be saved was beyond his control; he could only leave it to fate.
Yet, this incident served as a wakeup call for him. It’s said that life and fortune can change in an instant; they had parted well in the morning, but by evening, she was lying in the operating room for emergency treatment.
It had been a long time since he had felt such a sense of powerlessness in the real world.
This time it was Secretary Wen, and he could remain calm. What if it involved someone he cared about even more next time?
Before, he hadn’t considered this question.
Now, he thought it was time he seriously did.
Just then, the lights outside the surgery room went off, and the door was pushed open from the inside, with several doctors in white coats walking out.
Chen Xu and the others quickly stood up, stepped forward, and asked the doctor, “How is it? Is the person saved?”
A man in his forties replied, “The patient is temporarily out of life-threatening danger and needs to be observed in the ICU for two days. As for what condition she will recover to, that depends on her.”
Hearing that she wasn’t dead, Chen Xu breathed a sigh of relief, “Thank you, doctor.”
As he spoke, Secretary Wen was wheeled out, her face pale and scratched. He followed her stretcher all the way to the ICU and was stopped outside.
Through the door, Chen Xu watched as various tubes were inserted into Secretary Wen, and he instructed Secretary Jin, “There must be someone watching here 24/7–arrange it, and if she wakes up, notify me immediately.”
“Yes, Mr. Chen.”
Chen Xu left the hospital, and the arriving driver, likely informed by Secretary Jin, took charge of the driving.
“Take me home,” Chen Xu stated, leaning back to rest.
Today’s incident had made him realize an issue. He needed to think things through properly.
