Chapter 329: 329 Will
Three minutes later, Zhang Yixuan began to doubt his life.
“Ten-nil, still up for more?” Chen Xu asked, lightly patting the basketball.
Zhang Yixuan seemed not to hear, his expression a bit dazed.
Just now, Chen Xu had scored ten consecutive baskets against him using the exact same method–a stride and a breakthrough. He couldn’t react in time.
Sometimes Chen Xu would step with his left foot, other times his right, but no matter what, Zhang Yixuan couldn’t block him. After breaking through, it was a layup.
Simplistic and brutal, it was all about overpowering with speed.
Seeing him like this, Chen Xu walked over, patted his shoulder, and said, “Actually, you played well. You were close to stopping me.” Saying so, he tossed the ball over.
Zhang Yixuan caught the ball subconsciously, watching Chen Xu’s retreating figure with a somewhat muddled mind.
Back in college, he was on the basketball team, although just a substitute’s substitute with hardly any chance to play. But in terms of skills, he was no worse than anyone in the team. It was his physical condition that relegated him to the bench.
Against those physically superior varsity players, he couldn’t compare, but against amateur enthusiasts, his skills alone could overpower most. Plus, he was known for his speed.
Chen Xu was shorter than him, but his speed was incredibly exaggerated. Zhang Yixuan was used to being overpowered by strength, but he had never been bullied with speed like this before.
“Little bro, you okay?” Luo Xiyun stepped forward and gave him a push.
Zhang Yixuan shook his head and entered the villa without a word.
Luo Xiyun watched him go and felt he must have been struck a blow.
…
Chen Xu thought about Fang Yixuan’s expression a moment ago and couldn’t help wanting to laugh. The kid always acted so full of himself, obviously never having been battered by society. He felt it was his duty as a brother-in-law to teach him a lesson, to be a little more humble in life.
He returned to his room, took a shower, changed his clothes, and went out for breakfast.
By the time he arrived in the living room, everyone was already gathered.
“Just in time, since we’re all here, I have something to announce.”
Everyone had just sat down when the old lady spoke up. Everyone turned to her, waiting to hear more.
The old lady said, “At my age, I don’t have many days left. So, I prepared a will in advance–one copy is with Lawyer Yan, another is in a bank’s safety deposit box, and the key is in Xiyun’s possession. When the day comes that I’m gone, you can open the will then.”
Fang Zhiyuan said, “Mom, what are you talking about? You’ll live a long and healthy life.”
Luo Xiyun was somewhat agitated too, “Grandma, don’t say such things in the future.”
The old lady replied, “Alright, alright. Let’s drop it and eat.”
Chen Xu sat across from Fang Huwen and saw her expression change; clearly, she was also affected by these words.
In truth, how could there be lifelong enmity between mother and daughter?
Put oneself in her shoes–seeing her mother at such an age, not knowing when she might pass away–even if there were grievances, couldn’t they be set aside?
He thought, perhaps it wouldn’t be long before they reconciled.
“Chen Xu, come here, I have something to tell you.”
After breakfast, the old lady suddenly called Chen Xu’s name. He glanced at Luo Xiyun and followed her outside.
The old lady led him to the backyard. It was a small garden with rockeries, corridors, and various oddly shaped potted plants.
The old lady walked over to a small pool by the rockery, looked at the fish in the pool, and said, “Xiyun has deep feelings for you, and I hope you will treat her well.”
Chen Xu nodded solemnly and assured, “I will definitely treat her well.”
“She has had a hard life. Her mother passed away early, and her father didn’t want her. She could only follow around this old lady, and I’ve watched her grow up bit by bit. I don’t want her to suffer the slightest grievance.”
Chen Xu promised, “As long as I’m here, no one will be able to bully her.”
The old lady looked at him for a while and said, “I hope you remember what you said today.”
So, did he pass the test?
With the old lady’s stance like this, she probably didn’t object to their relationship.
Yesterday, she had been rather aloof, and Chen Xu had thought there would be issues, but it turned out she just wanted some assurances from him.
…
“What did grandma say to you?” When Chen Xu returned to the living room, Luo Xiyun pulled him aside into a room and asked.
Chen Xu smiled and said, “She told me to be good to you, or else she’d break my legs.”
“Nonsense, grandma would never do that,” Luo Xiyun gave a wry smile, but she couldn’t hide the happiness on her face. If he could still joke, it must be good news.
Chen Xu took her hand and said, “Now, your grandma agrees. It’s just your dad left.”
Upon hearing him mention her father, Luo Xiyun’s smile vanished. She knew that her dad would never agree to their relationship. The key lay with Yang Jinxia.
Seeing her change in expression, Chen Xu consoled her, “Don’t worry, I will definitely make him come around and truly wish us happiness.”
Luo Xiyun was a bit wary, “Don’t do anything rash. Tianluo Group is his lifeblood, and our family has a hereditary heart condition; he can’t take too much shock.”
“Then you…” Chen Xu said, tension rising within him.
“I don’t have it; I’ve been tested,” she responded.
Chen Xu breathed a sigh of relief and said, “No, from now on, you need to have an annual health check-up, keeping an eye on your condition at all times.”
“We were not talking about me. Don’t provoke him for no reason. If something happens to him, I…”
“Okay, I promise you.”
Chen Xu reluctantly assured her. He hadn’t realized Luo Zhenghai had such an issue–one that couldn’t stand a shock–this could be problematic.
“My grandfather and youngest uncle both died of heart disease. Last time, because of us, he was so angry he ended up in the hospital…”
[So, she left me partly because of this reason?] Chen Xu thought to himself.
Today, Luo Xiyun showed her vulnerable side, which made him feel a bit of heartache. He reckoned it was the old lady’s words during breakfast that had caused it.
Was the old lady making a will because she felt her days were numbered?
Luo Xiyun very likely harbored similar thoughts.
Knowing the place her grandmother held in her heart, Chen Xu quietly comforted her.
Originally, they had planned to stay two nights, but after what happened, Luo Xiyun decided to stay a few more days. Naturally, Chen Xu stayed with her.
As Luo Xiyun spent more time with the old lady, she had less time for Chen Xu. Besides chatting with the youngest aunt’s family, sometimes he’d go out with Fang Zhiyuan to experience the life of the wealthy.
One afternoon, Fang Zhiyuan even took him out to sea on a yacht.
Chen Xu felt that Fang Zhiyuan, this CEO, really didn’t focus on his business. He had never seen him work seriously.
