Eddie realized that Nina didn’t look as surprised as the other girls when she heard the names. Thus, he couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed.
Beth explained, “Nina’s from Maine. She doesn’t know much about this area.”
Eddie became interested again and boasted, “The Partners is a famous gang in Cambridge, and they are a gang directly under the Gallianos. Most of the marijuana channels in Cambridge are under their control!”
Beth stopped him. “Come on, Eddie. We girls don’t care about stuff like that. You should go join your friends. Nina and I can get ourselves something to drink.”
After Eddie left, Beth said resignedly, “Eddie’s always admired those gangsters. He thinks they’re cool. His dream is to be the right-hand man for some gang leader. The hero complex of men…”
Nina nodded understandingly, but her eyes were on Cathy.
At that moment, Cathy had her face pressed against the gang sub-chief’s.
Beth followed Nina’s gaze. “That’s Cathy Milton. She just became captain of the cheerleading team. She’s pretty famous at school.”
At that moment, the main character of the birthday party, Marion, suddenly exclaimed loudly, “The boss of the Gallianos, one of the largest mafia families in America, is actually a woman, and she’s about the same age as us!?”

The Hongmen? The mysterious Chinese organization that had members all around the world?
“Ambition, brains, ruthlessness. Without any of them, she would never have achieved what she did today. Stop saying such stupid things, Marion.”
Beth covered her mouth, keeping her voice low. “Did you hear that, Nina? The person they’re talking about is about our age.”
Nina set down her cold beer. “I’m going to use the restroom.”
When Nina walked out of the booth, Cathy let go of Joel’s hand and followed after her.
