Chapter 3: Armor

Just as Zhao Gao turned off the screen and was about to check on the others, a series of orderly footsteps came from outside the field.

The sound of footsteps could be heard.

Zhao Gao and the others saw two rows of soldiers in ancient armor, carrying spears. They entered from the main entrance.

As soon as they entered, the two rows of soldiers ran towards the edges of the field, until they finally surrounded Zhao Gao and the others.

“Roar… roar… roar…” A deafening roar sounded.

The soldiers raised their spears and ruthlessly pierced them into the ground. As they roared, a strong killing intent and fiendish aura surged towards Zhao Gao and the others.

“Danger! Danger! Death!” Just like ‘a mouse meeting a cat or an animal meeting its natural enemy’, Zhao Gao’s sixth sense sent him a series of fatal messages.

Some were so frightened that they sat on the ground.

Everyone turned to look at the direction of the voice, only to see a savage-looking tall man walking in.

He was wearing a helmet and armor. He had a saber hanging from his waist and a beard on his face. With the scar on his left eye, he looked even more savage.

As his war boots stomped on the ground, the sound of his footsteps, together with the powerful aura he emitted, caused the pressure in everyone’s hearts to become even heavier.

Zhao Gao could not help but break out in cold sweat. The pressure in his heart grew stronger as the man got closer. He did not dare to move.

For a moment, the only sound in the entire field was the sound of the man’s footsteps and armor clashing.

Finally, just as everyone was about to break down, the man stopped in his tracks and stood in front of them, restraining his aura.

“New recruits, welcome to Training Ground 1001.”

“Next, I will train you all to become qualified warriors.” Even without the loudspeaker, the man’s strong voice rang in everyone’s ears.

“Now, queue up!” The man’s shout shook in everyone’s ears.

“Twenty people in a row, stand properly!”

No one dared to disobey. They obediently followed the man’s instructions and lined up.

Even the troublemakers who had initially said that their boss was awesome, did not dare to disobey him.

Unknowingly, half an hour had passed by the time the people managed to get in line.

“You pieces of trash. It takes so long to even stand in a simple line. You are the worst batch of soldiers I have ever trained.”

“Listen up, remember your current position. I don’t want to wait so long next time.”

“Ten minutes. If you don’t do it properly, the caning will be thirty strokes.” The man’s exasperated voice rang out as he gave Zhao Gao and the others an ultimatum.

“Now, change your gear,” said the man. Several wagon loads of armor were then pushed from the gate of the field.

The soldiers distributed them to Zhao Gao and the others.

After Zhao Gao received the armor, he carefully examined it and found that it was made of the kind of metal used in ancient times. Each metal piece was polished to the size of a scale and sewn together.

Simply put, it was the ‘Tsubasa Armor’ from ancient times.

The helmet was like an iron helmet. It was no different from that in a TV drama.

There was a thin layer of cloth sewn into the iron helmet. Zhao Gao wondered what could this little bit of protection defend against?

The lower garment was an iron-scaled battle dress; and a pair of boots with a layer of iron on the outside.

And this was the full protection gear of these soldiers.

After everyone put on their battle armor according to the instructions given, another hour had passed.

“Gather!”

Everyone hurriedly lined up.

“Now, everyone, keep two meters apart from the people-front and back, left and right-around you.”

Everyone did as instructed.

“Distribute the weapons!” As the man waved his hand, the soldiers behind him pushed out another few carriages.

The soldiers brought down wooden shields and sabers from the carriages.

When they were given to Zhao Gao, he saw how simple and crude the equipment was.

The so-called standard equipment was a wooden shield the size of an iron pot and a large saber the length of an adult’s arm.

The only good news was that the thick and heavy saber was not easily bent.

Zhao Gao picked up the saber with his right hand and tried swinging it. It weighed about ten pounds.

The man waited for everyone to follow the instructions. He held the shield in his left hand and the saber in his right hand.

“Follow me and watch closely. I’ll only do it once! New recruits, learning this will give you a better chance of survival.”

The man said nothing more thereafter.

“Raise your shields!”

The man raised his shield horizontally with his left hand and raised it to the level of the nose on the upper half of his body. He also extended his left foot half a step forward, making a lunge.

Zhao Gao and the others followed suit and raised their shields.

“Keep shield!”

The man retracted his step and stood upright. The shield on his left hand naturally hung down to his left side.

“Slash!”

The man lunged, stepping forward with his right foot. With his right hand, he raised his saber high above his head and then brought it down heavily.

Zhao Gao saw that when the man’s saber reached his waist, it stopped there instantly. His arm did not move at all, and his body was not swayed by the saber at all.

Zhao Gao followed suit. He raised his saber and slashed. When he wanted to stop, he almost could not hold his saber properly.

The weight of the saber and the force of its descent were not something he-a man with suboptimal health-could master. Not to mention, this was only his first encounter with it.

However, even though Zhao Gao had managed to hold the saber firmly, not everyone had managed to do so. Most of the girls and a small number of boys had not managed to hold the saber at all.

It was still alright that their sabers fell to the ground. What was more unfortunate was that there were several people, whose bodies were directly cut by other’s saber.

“F*ck you, it hurts so much.” In an instant, a few people were injured and were cursing in pain.

The man said nothing. With a simple wave of his hand, he asked the soldiers beside him to drag the injured people away and pull them to the wall for bandage.

“Trash, it seems that I have overestimated you. Keep three meters away from one another.” No one dared to talk back to the man.

Everyone moved apart again. They were afraid that the person next to them would suddenly drop the saber and cut them.

“Raise your shields!”

Following the man’s shout, everyone raised their shields again.

“Keep shield!” Ten seconds later, the man shouted again.

“Slash!”

Everyone carried out their orders in silence.

“Retract your saber!”

After everyone kept their sabers, the man shouted angrily again.

“Didn’t you eat? You can’t even hold the saber properly?”

“Raise your voice!”

“Do it with me.”

“Raise your shields!”

“Ha!”

“Keep shield!”

“Ha!”

“Slash!”

“Ha!”

“Retract your saber!”

“Ha!”

The man shouted loudly and demonstrated to Zhao Gao and the others.
