During the following daylight hours, the remaining three each busied themselves with other tasks.
Summer Owen forced herself to calm down, took out the Egyptian Tribe’s Symbols filled with massive amounts of data that she had copied, as well as a notebook and pen she had found in Liam Lee’s room. She didn’t pry into Liam’s personal notes in the front, only intending to use the blank pages at the back to attempt the final verification step of the refining method by hand calculation. She wanted to organize the complex data into easily describable conclusions.
She wasn’t sure if she could leave, but she thought, if she were to die too, leaving something behind would make her death somewhat more meaningful. Assuming her colleagues at other research stations were in the same situation, having lost the assistance of quantum data, then she would be the only one on J919 to have a chance at completing the final calculation on paper. If everyone were to die and the Egyptian Tribe’s Symbols metal plates were all lost, then the years of investment on this planet would be wasted. If she found a way to work out the final formula and stored the small amount of information on a more reliable carrier, the project wouldn’t be a failure even if all the humans died.
Samantha, on the other hand, was helping Jamarion, attempting to further improve the performance of the antique radio equipment.
After more than two days, everyone at the various research stations seemed to be showing their skills. One of them found a way to enhance the strength of their outgoing radio signals, broadcasting their situation in shorthand text.
Although Jamarion couldn’t respond, he learned a bit of information.
The other party was from LQ Mountain Research Station No. 9, about three hundred kilometers away from Artala Basin Research Station No. 117. Last night and the night before, they too experienced two murders, and the victims were two scientists like Summer Owen.
Shortly after, LQ Mountain Research Station No. 9 released their method for enhancing radio signals, and soon, each research station successively announced their situation to the outside world.
Jamarion was shocked to learn that almost all the research stations had experienced mysterious deaths, and the victims’ identities varied.
However, there was one thing in common–all the professional pilots capable of flying small, fast armed ships in the research stations were still alive.
Jamarion shared the intelligence he had collected with Summer Owen.
At dusk, the three of them gathered again, trying to analyze something from this phenomenon.
Samantha suggested, “This could very well be an attack launched by the Compound-Eyed Observer through infiltration tactics. In any case, we should evacuate.”
Summer Owen shook her head, “It’s unlikely. Three years ago, before I set out for J919, I saw the latest battle reports indicating that it would be difficult for the Compound-Eyed Observer to infiltrate J919’s location in three years.”
Jamarion: “But it’s possible, isn’t it? Moreover, it’s more likely that the Compound-Eyed Observer has mastered an unknown method of remotely controlling our soldiers.”
“That’s absurd. Nowadays, human technology has surpassed the Compound-Eyed Observer, and the quantum resonance that controlled our minds in the past has become ineffective. Also, our soldiers have undergone willpower enhancement training. Derrius didn’t show any signs of being controlled.” Summer Owen shook her head.
Jamarion: “So you’re suggesting that there is indeed a fourth entity responsible for all the murders, and it’s not a pilot? But if it’s not the Compound-Eyed Observer, what other forces could it be? Who can simultaneously attack all research stations on the planet and kill one person per day?”
This question stumped Summer Owen.
She pondered for a while before saying, “The best option for now is to evacuate as soon as possible. Request for special military personnel to come and take control of the scene.”
Jamarion: “But our pilot is the prime suspect, and without him, we can’t take off. Besides, I believe we have a responsibility and a necessity to conduct a more in-depth investigation. We are the parties involved, and we can see more information. We have a responsibility to uncover more truth. Even if we have to hand over control to the military, we can wait for people from other research stations to evacuate first. They will also send out information.”
Once again, silence fell upon them.
…
Nobody would have expected that two hours later, Jamarion would suddenly burst out of his quarters, let out a mournful cry, spew blood from his mouth, and fall to the ground, curled up.
It seemed as if he wanted to say something before he died, but in the end, he didn’t manage to utter a word, only shuddering a few times before falling silent.
Now in Research Station No. 117, only two survivors and one suspect remained.
Terror and bewilderment filled the faces of Summer Owen and Samantha, who had rushed out upon hearing the scream.
The prime suspect, Derrius, was still imprisoned, but a third victim had surfaced.
“What…what’s going on?” Samantha’s lips trembled with fear. “Should…should we let Derrius out?”
Summer Owen shook her head, “Wait, let me think, let me think a little more…”
As they spoke, three minutes passed, and Jamarion’s corpse on the ground turned a bluish-black color.
Summer Owen was secretly alarmed.
It was a symptom of poisoning.
The prime suspect now seemed to be the seemingly harmless Samantha.
But Summer Owen didn’t expose her, instead quietly moving towards the entrance of the prison passage.
“Samantha, wait here for a moment. I’ll go let Derrius out first.”
