The authorities have arrived, and naturally, the villagers gathered outside had to disperse.

Shu Yu couldn’t return to the city either; it was so late that the gates had already been shut.

Young Master Jiang then invited them to stay temporarily at the manor. Fortunately, both Daniu and Third Lu had informed their families of their plans before leaving.

There wasn’t much need to worry about Zhou Qiao, and as for Madam Liang, she had long grown accustomed to Third Lu’s nights of not coming home. She would eat and sleep as usual.

What’s more, she knew Third Lu had gone to borrow money from the second household. She even speculated that he must be doing something for Yu. Once the task was completed, the money would naturally be lent, so she wasn’t concerned.

Young Master Jiang not only invited them but also extended the invitation to several officers.

However, Hu Li declined, citing the need to stay back and keep watch. The Cui Family could rest; there was no need for them to head to the manor.

In the end, it was Little Ya’er, unconscious as she was, who was carried away by Uncle Hu.

Young Master Jiang had no other choice but to ask Aunt Hu to deliver dinner to the Cui Family for the officers.

Shu Yu thought Hu Li’s reason for not going to the manor was because he planned to sneak into the woods at night.

So she dawdled, wanting to stay longer and seize the chance to go with them.

But who would’ve thought that Hu Li would shake his head, saying, “The guards will be even tighter at night. We’re proper officers investigating a murder case in broad daylight. If we go in the dead of night, wouldn’t that make us look guilty, as if we have ulterior motives? No, we won’t go tonight; we’ll set out tomorrow at daybreak.”

Fair enough. Since he said so, Shu Yu was at ease and returned to the manor to sleep.

The manor was brightly lit; Aunt Hu had long prepared a room for her. Her attitude was noticeably more kind and respectful than during their first meeting. It likely had to do with knowing Shu Yu’s identity as the Village Chief.

Shu Yu smiled at her and casually asked about Little Ya’er’s room; she wanted to check on her.

Little Ya’er was still unconscious. Uncle Hu would check on her every now and then, likely not getting much rest tonight.

Fortunately, the little girl’s fever had gone down. Though still in a deep sleep, her condition had improved significantly.

Shu Yu felt reassured and returned to her room to sleep.

She couldn’t deny that, though the manor was isolated and far from any village or shop, it was exceptionally tranquil.

There were hardly any chirping insects or birds, let alone the loud, boisterous noises of human activity outside.

Shu Yu slept until dawn and, upon waking, was momentarily disoriented about where she was.

It wasn’t until she heard Daniu and Third Lu talking at the door that she suddenly sat up.

Remembering the tasks Hu Li and the others had planned for today, Shu Yu quickly dressed and headed out.

Third Lu was standing at the door and turned around to greet her, “Yu, you’re up! Come, breakfast is ready. Hurry up and eat.”

Besides Uncle Hu and Aunt Hu, there were kitchen maids and other servants in the manor.

Third Lu had never experienced the luxury of waking up to such a lavish breakfast prepared by servants. At the moment, he looked particularly excited.

Shu Yu couldn’t help but laugh as she followed him to the flower hall.

Young Master Jiang was already seated there. Upon seeing her, he quickly stood up to greet her, “Lu…Village Chief.”

After a day of acquaintance, Shu Yu had learned his name–Jiang Kuanyu.
