Chapter 956: Chapter 956: The Rare Curio Sold by Shu Yu
Young Master Jiang understood. He also turned his head to glance at the bamboo forest twice before lowering his voice to whisper, “You don’t know, last year something rare appeared in the black market in Jiangyuan County.”
Something rare? How rare?
Young Master Jiang said, “It’s a mirror so smooth it can reflect even a single strand of hair with clarity. I heard that mirror was sent to the capital and eventually bought by the Third Prince’s consort. The consort held a banquet, and many noble madams and ladies were extremely envious, asking around where they could get such a mirror.”
Shu Yu thought, “…” So this rare item is actually something I sold myself?
She looked away into the distance, feeling slightly uneasy.
Young Master Jiang continued, “The mirror came from the black market in Jiangyuan County. Based on what the steward here says, someone specifically brought it to sell. The steward claimed the seller would continue delivering good items to the black market in the future. Because of this, several households came over to inquire. A few months ago, it got chaotic here, and they had no choice but to increase security.”
Shu Yu responded with a surprised “Ha?”–when did she ever say she’d bring more rare goods to the black market?
Clearly, even black markets compete with each other. That steward was deliberately hyping up Jiangyuan County’s black market to make it stand out.
Poor her, carrying the blame for something she had no part in. Well, serves them right; after all this trouble, they’re stuck increasing their own guards. They deserve what’s coming to them.
Shu Yu felt quite indignant about it, but now that she’d figured out the reason, she breathed a sigh of relief. If she ever lacked money in the future and needed to sell rare items again, she’d definitely avoid this black market.
The two kept talking as they walked to the far left side of the bamboo forest. The slope here was steep enough that a misstep could send someone tumbling down–and climbing back up wouldn’t be easy.
With just a glance, Shu Yu spotted signs of a landslide on the ground. Her heart sank, and she squatted down to take a closer look. Indeed, someone had fallen down there.
“Could it be Little Ya’er?” Young Master Jiang had also noticed.
He looked down the slope and exhaled in relief. Although steep, it wasn’t excessively high.
“Lady Lu, do you have any ropes in your carriage? If not, could you drive it back to the manor and fetch me two ropes? I’ll tie them to myself and go down to check.”
Originally, Shu Yu had intended to go down herself. What she didn’t expect was for this young noble to have such gentlemanly bearing–upon seeing someone possibly injured below, his first thought wasn’t to run for help but to go down himself.
She nodded and said, “There are ropes in the carriage. Ying Xi, go fetch them.”
“Understood.”
Ying Xi ran off quickly and returned with the ropes in no time.
Shu Yu tied one end of the rope firmly to a thick tree trunk nearby and the other to Young Master Jiang’s waist. She then watched as he cautiously descended.
Soon, a joyful shout came up from below: “Found them!”
Shu Yu let out a silent sigh of relief. “Can you bring them up?”
“Yes. Little Ya’er is only five years old, and due to long-term malnutrition, she’s quite small and light.”
Young Master Jiang redistributed some of the rope to secure the child on his back, then slowly climbed back up, gripping onto support where he could.
Once he was standing safely, he immediately said, “She’s unconscious. I felt her forehead–it’s burning up badly with a fever. Not sure how long she’s been in this state. We need to get her back to the manor quickly so Uncle Hu can take a look.”
Shu Yu hurriedly untied the girl from him. Indeed, her fever was frighteningly high.
“I have fever-reducing medicine in my carriage. Let’s get her a dose first while sending her back.”
With that, she carried the girl and started walking. Young Master Jiang could only shake his head helplessly before turning to untie the ropes himself.
