Chapter 1091: Chapter 1091: Identification_1
Bridget Stone sat in the witness stand, recounting her experience that day: “…The subway was really crowded at the time, he was standing in front of me, holding onto the railing, his arm was sort of like this…bent, and with the elbow, he rubbed against my chest.”
The prosecutor asked, “What was your reaction at the time?”
“I was disgusted,” Bridget Stone frowned, her expression unmistakably repulsed, “but the subway was just too packed, I couldn’t move to another spot. I tried to turn my body to the side, but then he…he pressed against me again, his whole arm on me, on my chest, it was revolting!”
“Did you curse at him?” the prosecutor continued.
“I don’t quite remember,” said Bridget Stone, “I was too angry at the time, I only remember cursing a lot, but I can’t recall what exactly I said.”
“And how did the other person react? Did he get very angry?”
“I think so… his face was very red, even his neck was red, he looked like…like a madman on the verge of frenzy!” Bridget Stone seemed still shaken, her voice tense, “I was really scared. After getting to my stop, I hurried off, but I noticed that he disembarked too, as if he was following me. I…I was terrified! I just wanted to get home immediately, so I took a shortcut, but he still caught up with me! He…he…”
Bridget Stone choked up: “He pulled out a knife, pressed it against my stomach, and told me to take off my underwear! I…”
The prosecutor sighed softly, deeming it inappropriate to continue, and said, “Thank you, that will be enough.”
When it was Purple Summers’ turn to begin cross-examination, she stood up and asked, “Ms. Stone, I’ve read the police report, and you described the environment at the time in great detail, including how twenty meters ahead of the alley there was a streetlamp, both sides of the alley were lined with residential communities, nearby there were trash bins, and so on, many details.”
“Yes, at the time the officer said the more details, the better to help them catch the criminal quickly.”
“But your description of the suspect was only…a fat guy wearing glasses.” Purple Summers asked her, “Don’t you think it’s a bit too simple?”
Bridget Stone was slightly annoyed, her brow furrowed as she said, “When you face something like this, do you actually pay attention to what shoes he’s wearing or what hairstyle he has?”
Purple Summers pursed her lips, silent for a while, and then said, “Ms. Stone, I empathize with what you’ve gone through, but I also hope you can understand that charging someone with rape is a very serious accusation, and if the wrong person is charged, it can cause irreparable harm.”
“I understand,” Bridget Stone said, biting her lip and looking towards Norton Young not far away, “the man that night was him!”
“Ms. Stone, why are you so sure? The streetlamp was some distance from the scene of the crime, wasn’t it?”
“Yes, but the lighting at the time was enough for me to see his face clearly!” Bridget Stone asserted decisively.
Purple Summers, puzzled, asked, “When he pointed the knife at you, where were your eyes looking? When he asked you to take off your underwear, where were your eyes looking? When he asked you to turn around so he could assault you from behind, where were your eyes looking?”
“But I saw him when he chased after me!” Bridget Stone’s face flushed with anger, showing her rage, “I saw him! It was him! That fat and disgusting ugly man!”
Purple Summers fell silent, as if waiting for Bridget Stone to calm down.
The judge spoke up, “Defense lawyer?”
“Your Honor, please allow me to conduct a small test with Ms. Stone in the courtroom,” Purple Summers spoke earnestly, “It concerns the validity of her identification of my client.”
The judge looked at the prosecutor: “The defense’s proposal, does the prosecution agree?”
The prosecutor had no objection.
Purple Summers then walked up to Bridget Stone, pointing to a corner of the spectator’s gallery: “Ms. Stone, do you recognize that man? The one sitting in the last row, on the far right.”
Bridget Stone was confused: “I don’t know him.”
Purple Summers said, “He’s been a security guard at your Community’s gate, working there for two years now. He’s just not wearing his uniform today.”
