Chapter 1090: Chapter 1090: Trial_1
The jury took their seats one by one, and the courtroom gradually fell silent.
Purple Summers looked around the courtroom and finally spotted the victim, Bridget Stone, beside the prosecutor.
Her appearance wasn’t particularly remarkable, but she had a graceful stature that suggested she might have studied dance, which added considerably to her appeal. Sitting there quietly, she was also quite pleasant to behold.
Purple Summers whispered to Norton Young beside her, “Do you know she’s a stage actor?”
Norton Young was taken aback, then quickly responded, “Do you think she’s deliberately acting?”
“I don’t know,” Purple Summers sighed. “I don’t like such dark speculations about others… But deliberately requesting a public hearing to increase her exposure is quite suspicious, isn’t it?”
Norton Young realized, “That singer from last time! No one knew her before, but after the incident, everyone became concerned about how the singer was coping with the psychological trauma. Once it was discovered she released new work, they highly praised her, and there was a lot of publicity about how strong and inspirational she was.”
With this explanation, it seemed to make sense.
Could this case actually be a method of using someone else to create hype for oneself?
Purple Summers furrowed her brows.
At that moment, the judge struck the gavel and announced the start of the hearing.
The first witness for the prosecution was a police officer who had arrested Norton Young at that time.
“We rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report, searched the vicinity based on the characteristics described by the victim… and then, we saw the defendant who matched the description and found the victim’s underwear in his possession, which led to his emergency arrest.”
The prosecutor asked, “After the arrest, did the victim correctly identify the defendant?”
“Yes,” the officer nodded. “The victim immediately identified the defendant.”
Purple Summers stood up and asked, “May I ask what my client was doing when you arrested him?”
“He was about 200 meters away from the crime scene on a street… At that time, he was sitting alone on the curb, holding that pair of underwear,” the officer answered.
“What was my client’s expression when he saw you appear?” Purple Summers continued.
The officer hesitated for a moment, then frowned, “…He seemed to be surprised, I guess.”
“Did he try to run when he saw you?” Purple Summers asked again.
The officer shook his head. “No, he did not run.”
Purple Summers nodded thoughtfully and inquired, “In your experience, is it normal for a person who has just committed a crime not to run when seeing the police?”
“Oh… maybe he was too scared, frozen with fear,” the officer shrugged.
Purple Summers smiled, “Do you think a criminal daring enough to sexually assault a woman in the street would be timid?”
The officer’s expression turned awkward as he replied, “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know…” Purple Summers pursed her lips. “What about the underwear? Did he try to hide it when he saw you?”
“No.”
“Did he say anything when you arrested him?”
“He… He was very panicked, asking us what happened.”
“Thank you,” Purple Summers sat down. “I have finished my questioning.”
Norton Young was very nervous and asked her in a low voice, “Do we need Mrs. Morrison to testify now?”
“No rush,” Purple Summers reassured. “A character witness only has an effect when the other side questions your character. The victim hasn’t taken the stand yet. Let’s wait.”
As soon as she finished speaking, she indeed heard that the prosecutor was calling Bridget Stone to testify.
The prosecutor, as usual, asked the victim to briefly recount the incident to ensure that the jury and the judge had a clear understanding of the case process–
Bridget Stone was sexually harassed on the subway, she had a fierce argument with the perpetrator, and afterward, while on her way home, she was angrily cornered in an alley and violently sexually assaulted. The perpetrator then ran away, and Stone immediately used her cell phone to call the police.
After the police arrived, they immediately searched the vicinity and captured the suspect Norton Young, discovering physical evidence.
The facts of the case were clear, with almost no flaws.
