Chapter 1066: Chapter 1066: Steps One Two Three_1 Chapter 1066: Chapter 1066: Steps One Two Three_1 When the court reconvened, Oscar Smith’s wife, Emily Lewis, sat next to the lawyer, holding her daughter Jenny.
Both mother and daughter had eyes red from crying as if they had been through a major ordeal.
Emily’s gaunt face was clearly visible, with her hair disheveled at the temples and her lips a dull color, while her daughter clung tightly to her neck, the unease in her eyes heartbreakingly evident.
Their appearance was enough to stir sympathy in anyone.
The lawyer realized that Purple Summers was the sole defense attorney left, and a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes. He scrutinized her always calm expression, unable to find any information, which left him feeling vaguely uneasy.
He knew that the president’s daughter was a fine lawyer, but he was no less competent, with decades of experience and few losses to his name, and this case, in particular, seemed heavily to his advantage.
As long as he could persuade the jury to side with him, the case was as good as won.
The judge reminded both the prosecution and defense to begin their closing arguments.
The prosecutor would go first.
The lawyer stood up and walked slowly toward the jury.
“When I first took on this case, I hesitated,” the lawyer said in a low voice, as he began his closing argument.
“We all know that Oscar Smith took his own life. This means he climbed to that window, jumped from the ninth floor, and chose death all by himself. No one else is to blame. So why seek compensation?”
The lawyer pointed at Emily and her child: “But when I saw them, I knew I couldn’t refuse, even if the opponent was the most powerful and influential person in Pearlpoint City, even if the opponent was the president’s son-in-law! I had to fight for these poor mother and daughter, to win what they deserved!”
Firstly, he highlighted the power struggle.
Purple Summers noted this on her pad.
“The questioning earlier was outrageous! The defense attorney, to avoid responsibility, kept asking this poor woman what she had eaten, what she had bought-what does that prove?! Does she have to weep until she’s heartbroken for her sadness and pain to be seen?!”
The lawyer looked seriously at the jury members and said in a deep tone, “Ladies and gentlemen, life isn’t a TV drama. Reality is her daughter constantly asking why her dad isn’t coming home. Did dad bring a gift? Where is he really? She is in so much pain, yet she has to keep this family together! —
That’s why she went shopping, buying clothes and toys, pretending that everything was a gift from her husband, and then telling her daughter that daddy can’t come home right now, but look, daddy still loves you. He bought you your favorite dress, your favorite toys, cake… Daddy missed Christmas, but mommy didn’t want her daughter to have regrets. She just wanted her little girl to have a joyful Christmas, that’s all!”
Tears were already gleaming in the eyes of some in the gallery.
Some among the jury were visibly moved.
Taking a deep breath and with heavy voice, the lawyer continued, “This is the harsh reality. Ladies and gentlemen, this woman is almost crushed by life, and the grilling by the defense attorney is undoubtedly like rubbing salt into her wounds!”
Secondly, he explained the unreasonable testimony.
“We all know what gambling is; it lures people into degeneracy, drives them to commit crimes. Despite our media and government’s repeated warnings about the adverse effects of gambling, countless people still flock to it! I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’ve had enough!”
The lawyer pointed at Alexander Summers, “You see that man? No matter how well-dressed and dignified he appears, it can’t hide the fact that his casino is constantly extracting hard-earned money from people! To say that those sumptuous casinos are built on the flesh and blood of numerous gamblers wouldn’t be an exaggeration at all!
The slot machines, baccarat, roulette, Texas Hold’em… and so on, are all his tools of wealth accumulation! The gambling games, seemingly fair, are all designed with meticulously calculated odds, making them no different than fraud! Yet such fraud persists in our society! What should we do?!”
