Chapter 1063: Chapter 1063 You’re the Bad Guy_1 Chapter 1063: Chapter 1063 You’re the Bad Guy_1 The judge struck the gavel.
As expected, the prosecutor’s first witness was Oscar Smith’s wife, Emily Lewis.
The prosecutor was older, looking solemn and composed.
Alexander Summers said this lawyer’s last name was Fabian, Jeremy Jennings’s go-to attorney, who had helped Jennings escape conviction numerous times.
The lawyer said to Emily Lewis, “Mrs. Lewis, I sympathize with your ordeal. Could you describe what happened on the day your husband passed away?”
Emily Lewis replied, “It was Christmas Eve. He almost always went to the casino in Pearlpoint City during the holidays, and he did that day too. He said he’d be back for Christmas… and that he’d bring a gift for Jenny. Later, around midnight, I got a call from the police, telling me my husband was dead.”
“Did the police tell you how your husband died?” the lawyer asked.
Emily Lewis nodded. “Yes, they did. He committed suicide by jumping off a building.”
The lawyer then asked, “Mrs. Lewis, knowing it was suicide, on what grounds are you requesting 15 million in compensation from the Summers Group?”
“Even though it was a suicide, I believe that my husband’s death is related to the casino owned by the Summers Group; the casino should bear some responsibility,” Emily Lewis stated. “He was a hardworking man before he got involved with the casino. As he became addicted, he lost more and more money, and his character became increasingly irritable and extreme. If it weren’t for this gambling, he wouldn’t have taken his own life.”
The lawyer summarized for her, “So you believe that gambling changed his temperament, which ultimately led to his death? And the Summers Group should be held accountable for this tragedy, correct?”
“Yes,” Emily Lewis said.
“I think everyone must be curious why 15 million.” The lawyer glanced in the jury’s direction. “Could you explain that?”
Emily Lewis took a deep breath, her face showing a complex mixture of emotions, “Based on the harm done to me… to my entire family, that’s why I’m asking the court for 15 million in compensation. After Oscar’s death, the processing plant he ran was virtually shut down. We couldn’t deliver products on time or collect the final payments, and our clients want to terminate their contracts with us, causing huge financial losses… Besides, I lost my husband, my daughter lost her father, and Jenny asks me every night why Daddy isn’t coming back… Summers Group has caused immeasurable scars to my family, and they must be held accountable!”
“Thank you. I believe the court will deliver a fair verdict,” the lawyer nodded and returned to his seat.
Purple Summers stood up and asked, “Mrs. Lewis, could you please describe your marital relationship with Mr. Smith?”
Emily Lewis furrowed her brows, “It was okay.”
“What do you mean by okay?” Purple Summers asked, “Is it good, or is it not good?”
Emily Lewis pursed her lips and replied, “Our relationship should be considered okay, we occasionally argued, but it didn’t affect our marriage…”
“Just argued?” Purple Summers picked up a document in her hand and showed it to her, “I have an injury report here, showing that your nose and ribs were once broken from blunt force trauma. Mrs. Lewis, you’re a full-time homemaker, right? Who at home would do this to you?”
Emily Lewis clenched her lips tightly and did not answer.
The prosecutor stood up: “Objection! Your Honor, this has nothing to do with the case at hand!”
Purple Summers stated, “The claim is based on the emotional harm and the damage suffered by the witness’s family. I believe the status of the marital life should be within the scope of the court’s consideration. If the witness’s marital relationship was already broken, then the grounds for the claim do not stand.”
The judge pondered and said, “Objection overruled. The defense may continue its questioning.”
Purple Summers looked at Emily Lewis, “Mrs. Lewis, after enduring years of domestic abuse, do you still firmly believe that there was no problem with your feelings for each other? Is that correct?”
Emily Lewis bit her lower lip, her complexion turning pale.
Purple Summers asked again, “Mrs. Lewis, please answer, after being repeatedly beaten by your husband, do you still love him?”
At that moment, the sound of a child’s crying erupted from the spectator’s gallery.
Oscar Smith’s five-year-old daughter cried out loudly, “You’re a bad person! Don’t you bully my mommy!”
