Chapter 30: Assistant

After making arrangements for Emily, Catherine went to a narrow cubicle upstairs alone. This room was not big, and there was not much furniture inside either. There was only a single bed.
The four white walls were hung full of portraits, and even the bed was covered with them. There were photos, stick-figure drawings, sketches, and even watercolor portraits inside.
However, upon taking a closer look, one could see that all the big and small portraits in the room were of the same person. It was actually Andre’s face!
Catherine crawled onto the bed a little helplessly and hugged the photo on the bed. She kissed it deeply and caressed it, as though that photo was a living person.
She fantasized about Andre kissing her back and hugging her passionately. After a while, her face revealed a greatly satisfied expression.
The sun and moon revolved, and the pitch-black night was already startled awake by the light of dawn.
For Catherine, this was a tragic, sad, and angry night. However, it was the opposite for Layla.
Layla slept very soundly. She opened her eyes somewhat lazily and realized that Andre was no longer beside her. It seemed like he had woken up early.
However, he had already prepared Layla’s new clothes and wheelchair.
Andre was really great at that kind of thing. After finishing the first time and having had a shower, he had embraced Layla a few more times.
Layla’s back and legs ached from yesterday’s ‘torment’, and her body felt like it had fallen apart. She did not have much energy.
This caused her to sleep especially soundly today. Even when Andre got up and left, Layla did not notice at all.
When she thought of how Andre had carried her to bed last night, helped her wipe her body and blow dry her hair considerately, and had even arranged for a servant to buy a bunch of clothes for her, a sweet smile appeared on Layla’s face.
Although these were probably just things that ordinary couples would do together, she was surprised and a little happy that he was being so tender to her now, when he had been bent on sending her away not long ago.
Furthermore, these things had been done by Andre on his own accord for Layla. The smile on Layla’s face became even more radiant, and it felt sweet in her heart.
After Layla got up and cleaned up, the servants who had been ordered by Andre were already waiting by the side. They took her to the dining table and waited patiently for Layla’s next instructions.
Layla looked at the sumptuous breakfast and took a sip of soy milk. “Where’s Andre… Uncle Andre?”
Layla thought for a while before addressing him with the original honorific.
The servants had been with Andre for a long time, and news of what had happened last night had already spread among them.
The female housekeeper was considerate enough not to expose Layla’s embarrassment. “Ms. Layla, the master has already gone to work. Before he left, he ordered us to let you do whatever you want. All of us will be at your service.”
Layla’s eyes lit up as an idea immediately formed in her mind.
It was 11 o’clock in the morning, and the weather outside was nice. It was a bright and sunny day.
Layla packed up and left, getting the chauffeur to drive over to fetch her.
Andrew was in his office dealing with company matters when there was a knock on the door.
Without raising his head, he said impassively, “Come in.”
Upon noticing that the person who had entered did not speak for a long time, Andre realized that the person who had entered was the young girl, Layla.
Andre did not seem to be too surprised by Layla’s arrival. He only responded briefly to her greeting before continuing to work seriously.
Layla sat in the wheelchair in some embarrassment. Her eyes were empty, and the smile on her lips had disappeared too. She did not push the wheelchair in front of Andre as she had in the past. She just stayed in place silently.
After what had happened last night, Layla initially thought that she and Andre had already become intimate, so their relationship should have changed.
Besides, although Andre had been passionate like fire about her last night, Layla had still sensed gentleness in his actions.
However, what had happened this morning? Andre seemed to have returned to his cold-hearted and aloof self.
This change made Layla feel as though a huge stone was pressing down on her heart, making her unable to breathe.
