Chapter 1026: 1025 Enemies on a narrow road
Fang Zhiwei explained softly, her heart heavy with concern for her father, yet she didn’t want to dampen everyone’s spirits.
Gu Kai’s deep voice carried an unmistakable authority, “You must be worried about your uncle right now. It’s not safe for you to drive alone. I’ll take you back. Mo Xiuchen, take good care of Ranran.”
“No problem, and be careful on the road, don’t rush.”
Mo Xiuchen advised kindly, “Call me when you get back to G City.”
Gu Kai nodded, then turned to Fang Zhiwei and whispered, “Let’s go.”
On the way back, Gu Kai drove with intense focus, while Fang Zhiwei, worried about her father, had no mood for conversation, so the car was very quiet.
Upon arriving in G City, Gu Kai drove Fang Zhiwei straight to the city’s People’s Hospital. Fang Zhiwei went to visit her father’s ward, while he went to speak with the attending physician.
**
Encountering someone twice in one day, if it were someone you liked, you might feel delighted.
But if it were someone you both loathed, it would be quite frustrating.
That was how Bai Yiyi felt.
An hour earlier, she had taken Tongtong to play in the park.
While descending the stairs, the image of Gu Kai’s angry eyes suddenly surfaced in her mind, as well as the moment when Li En had tucked her hair behind her ear and Gu Kai’s disdainful and repulsed look.
Distracted, she missed her step and instinctively protected Tongtong in her arms, twisting her own foot in the process.
Her mother had wanted to call Li En to take her to the hospital, but Bai Yiyi didn’t want to bother him with everything and rejected her mother’s suggestion, telling her not to inform Li En.
She took a taxi to the nearby People’s Hospital. Fortunately, it was only a soft tissue strain; the doctor treated her with medication and prescribed some oral anti-inflammatory drugs.
When the elevator door opened and she saw Gu Kai standing inside, surprise flickered in her eyes, and she instinctively turned and fled.
“Bai Yiyi, stop.”
Gu Kai was also startled to see Bai Yiyi here. He hadn’t expected to bump into her.
Originally, he should have been pleased by her conscious avoidance, but his eyebrows furrowed upon seeing her limping right foot, and before the information could fully process in his brain, he had already spoken out.
Bai Yiyi cursed under her breath, turned her head, and looked at him coldly, “What do you want?”
Her tone was sharp. If it weren’t for this man, her foot wouldn’t be injured.
“Get in.”
Gu Kai’s gaze swept over her foot, and his tall frame shifted aside to make room. Actually, there was no one else in the elevator, but he made it clear that Bai Yiyi could enter.
Bai Yiyi pursed her lips, hesitating internally about whether to share the elevator with him.
She detested this cursed fate.
As the elevator doors were about to close, Gu Kai raised his hand and pressed the button again, his tall and straight figure standing inside. His dark eyes were fixed on Bai Yiyi.
“You don’t have to look at me and run off as if seeing a ghost.”
His voice was low and chilly. Bai Yiyi frowned involuntarily and, after a moment’s hesitation, limped into the elevator, standing in a corner two steps away from him.
The doors closed, and the space immediately felt cramped, the air thinning.
Bai Yiyi looked down at her toes, trying to minimize her presence to avoid angering the person beside her.
“What happened to your foot?”
Gu Kai stood with his hands in his pockets, his narrow eyes emitting a sharp light, as a cold gleam shot towards Bai Yiyi’s foot.
She was taken aback and looked up at Gu Kai, a flicker of astonishment crossing her eyes.
“You didn’t sprain your ankle by getting entangled with some sleazy guys, did you?” Seeing her surprised look and her silence, a wave of anger surged forth in Gu Kai’s heart for no reason, and his tone shifted from somber to mocking.
The flicker of astonishment in Bai Yiyi’s eyes quickly turned into disbelief and then annoyance.
“What’s it to you?”
“It seems I guessed right,” Gu Kai said with a corner of his mouth curled into a mocking smile. “Why isn’t that guy named Li En accompanying you to the hospital?”
Bai Yiyi pressed her lips together and stayed silent.
She told herself just to endure it, and it would pass.
The elevator arrived on the first floor. Gu Kai stood still, not moving, while Bai Yiyi limped out of the elevator toward the main entrance. Gu Kai followed her, watching coldly as she left the hospital.
He found himself following her out of the hospital without realizing it.
Seeing Bai Yiyi hailing a taxi by the roadside, Gu Kai’s brows furrowed. He strode forward, grabbed her wrist, and said, “I’ll take you back.”
Bai Yiyi had already stopped a taxi and was about to open the door to get in when Gu Kai suddenly grasped her wrist. She turned her head and glared at him. “What are you doing?”
“Come with me.”
Gu Kai, without explanation, pulled Bai Yiyi toward his parking spot.
When they reached his car, he let go of her hand. Before she could react, he spoke first. “Don’t you know there’s been news lately about taxi drivers targeting stupid women like you to rob and assault. You just get into any car with no sense at all.”
Bai Yiyi stared blankly at Gu Kai, forgetting to argue for a moment.
“Get in.”
Gu Kai opened the car door, gave her a gentle push, and she came to her senses, frowning and speaking sharply. “Who wants to ride in your car?”
“If it weren’t for Ranran’s sake, I wouldn’t bother with you. Hurry up and get in, don’t delay my matters.”
Gu Kai saw that she was always opposing him, and his face darkened again. He forcefully pushed her into the car, slammed the door, walked briskly around the front of the car, and sat in the driver’s seat.
“Fasten your seatbelt.”
Gu Kai commanded in a cold voice, then lowered his head and fastened his own seatbelt.
Bai Yiyi’s lips pressed tightly, her complexion not looking any better than his.
“I don’t need your ride.”
“Today you’re lucky to have run into me. If you had gotten into a bad person’s car just now, you would have had nowhere to cry,” Gu Kai exaggeratedly frightened her.
Although there had been a taxi driver who molested and killed young women and was on the wanted list–that was true–it didn’t mean the driver of the taxi Bai Yiyi was about to take was a bad person.
Bai Yiyi shot him a look, holding back, and pulled on her seatbelt to buckle it.
The car set off, and Gu Kai glanced at Bai Yiyi through the rearview mirror. The darkness on his face eased a bit, and he asked indifferently, “What did the doctor say?”
Bai Yiyi was turned sideways, looking out the window, but when she heard his words, she turned her head. “It’s a soft tissue strain, nothing serious.”
“How did you hurt yourself?”
Gu Kai continued to ask. Since he was taking her home, he felt entitled to know how she injured her foot.
Bai Yiyi obviously didn’t want to answer too many of his questions, but considering his sudden act of kindness in taking her home and the fact he was Ranran’s brother, she reluctantly explained. “I accidentally twisted it going down the stairs.”
“How stupid.”
Her response was met with Gu Kai’s disdain.
