Chapter 34: Afraid of Death

She leaned over to size him up, only to see two large dark circles and bags under his eyes. He looked like he’d aged ten years.

“Thanks to you, I didn’t sleep for half the night.” Yu Heng yawned and stood up. He drank the remaining half bottle of water from yesterday in one go and walked towards the forest.

Yu Heng ran to the stream and washed his face with water. Only then did he feel a little more energetic. He moved the numb half of his body. All he heard was the crackling sound of bones being stretched. Yu Heng thought to himself, I can grow taller now.

He walked around the valley a few times before planning to go back. That young lady had probably gone back after such a long time.

“Morning, Brother Yu Heng.” Yi Shi’s voice came from behind. Yu Heng turned around and saw Yi Shi carrying a basket.

“Morning, are you here to guard the grains?” Yu Heng greeted her. He wanted to avoid Yi Shi now. Otherwise, if Yi Ke saw him, she might cause trouble again.

“My mother’s here to keep watch. I’m bringing her food.” Yi Shi smiled and pulled the cloth away from the basket. “I got up this morning to make some tortillas. Have some.”

“No need. Yu Yu will bring me food later.” Yu Heng rejected her good intentions. Anyone in the village could tell that Yi Shi seemed to be interested in him. With his family’s situation, how could he delay the girl’s marriage?

Yi Shi did not force him. The two of them exchanged a few pleasantries before leaving. Yi Shi went to look for her mother while Yu Heng went back to look at his family’s grains.

“Look! Here and here, there are mosquito bites all over my legs!” Yu Heng could hear Yi Ke’s voice from afar. He could imagine Yi Ke’s expression. She frowned aggrievedly, but there was more cunningness in her eyes, like a little fox scamming meat.

“Aiyo, my lady, how did you get bitten like this? I’ll bring you more Flower Dew and Mosquito Repellent later.” Wan Shi looked at the red spots all over Yi Ke’s body with heartache. Most of the mosquitoes in the mountains were vicious. One bite was enough to cause a swollen bump. It looked quite scary.

As Wan Shi rambled on, “Don’t come again”, he poured a glass of warm water from the thermos flask for Yi Ke to rinse her mouth. The bodyguard beside her was still holding a towel, washbasin, toothbrush cup, and even toothpaste.

The villagers had never seen such a scene before. All of them craned their necks to watch them work.

When Yu Heng walked to Yi Ke’s side, she had just finished washing up. She had been drinking water from a thermos flask for half a day, so Wan Shi took out breakfast for her one by one.

Crab meatballs, soup dumplings, black rice and purple sweet potato porridge, and golden fried shrimp balls. This was Missy’s ordinary breakfast.

The chefs brought by Yi Ke were excellent. The fragrance of the food was rich and spread in all directions. Many villagers looked at them covetously, swallowing their saliva from time to time.

Yu Heng looked at those gazes and felt terrified. He was used to not feeling anything when he was at home, but now that he saw Yi Ke’s expression that said, “I’m very valuable, come and rob me.” He felt a headache coming on.

“Yi Ke, go home and eat in the future. Don’t eat here.” Yu Heng walked over and lowered his voice to ensure that only the few of them could hear him.

“Why? Don’t you all eat here?” Yi Ke took a bite of the xiaolongbao. The fragrance was even stronger.

Yu Heng frowned and gave her a warning look.

“Do you want to see how many people are around you and how many bodyguards you brought? If they really fight, who will care about you?” Yu Heng said resentfully. “Also, speak softer now.
