Chapter 631: Chapter 632: Where Did This Madman Come From
Lu Tong had been living in the Su family for some time, going from initial unfamiliarity to current adaptation.
He was starting to relax.
He walked over and said, “Aunt Su, shall I help you start a fire?”
Su Shu smiled and said, “Do you know how?”
“I know how, I’ll help you.”
“Alright then, the kindling is over here. I’ll get the fire started; you just help by adding wood. Be careful not to burn yourself.”
“Mm.”
After Su Shu spoke, she went to fetch a fire starter and lighter to start the fire.
Together, they worked, and in no time, the steaming porridge was ready.
Su Shu pushed the door open and called for the two children playing happily in the yard to come in for a meal.
As the four of them were eating, a knock on the door was heard from outside, which caused them all to look up.
Su Shu put down her chopsticks. “I’ll go have a look. You all keep eating, don’t mind it.”
The three children bowed their heads and continued eating as she stood up to open the door. When it opened, there stood a strange woman outside.
Su Shu was slightly taken aback. “May I ask who you are?”
The visitor was a woman around thirty or forty years of age, neither tall nor short but with a somewhat thin frame, gaunt chin, and hollow cheeks that made her look very listless. She seemed a little constrained at the moment Su Shu opened the door.
It was as if she came with some intention but didn’t know how to greet her.
Su Shu, having never seen the woman before, tightened her grip on the door, eyeing her warily.
Seeing Su Shu’s stern expression, the woman, in fear of disdain, quickly moved a bag of rice–around 50 kilograms–into Su Shu’s view before Su Shu could react.
“Take this rice, young lady!”
Su Shu was startled by the bag of rice in front of her. Without any close relationship, why would someone deliver food to her home, especially during such times?
Looking at the frail figure of the woman, if anyone should receive the grain, it should rather be her keeping it for herself.
She declined.
But the woman held onto the bag of rice, insisting on giving it to her.
Su Shu’s face darkened. “I don’t know you, and I won’t take this bag of rice. Please take it back. My family’s surname is Su; you must have the wrong address.”
As she said this, she intended to close the door, but the woman suddenly rushed forward, her hands pressing against the door to prevent it from shutting.
“I know, I know, your family’s surname is Su, I didn’t get it wrong. The rice is for you; I want to take my son back home!”
“What?!”
Take her son back home? What did bringing her son have to do with coming to her doorstep?
Su Shu’s expression turned to utter surprise. “My family doesn’t have your son, you’ve got the wrong house.”
“No! I didn’t get it wrong! I didn’t get it wrong! Give me back my son! I have rice now; I won’t sell my son. Give him back to me!” The woman suddenly began shouting, desperate to break in.
Inside, the three children were still eating. How could Su Shu let such a crazed woman burst in and scare the children?
Quickly, she took hold of the woman’s arms, pushing her out the door.
Unable to struggle free, the woman was forcefully escorted outside of the gate by Su Shu. Seeing that she could not force her way in, the woman began wailing outside the courtyard gates.
Early in the crisp morning, such piercing cries naturally drew the attention of many neighbors who gathered around.
On the first day of early snow, the sky was still sprinkling fine snowflakes. Although not heavy, as they landed on faces and necks, they brought a bone-chilling coldness.
Despite this, people started to gather in twos and threes in front of Su Shu’s house, intent on watching the commotion unfold.
From down the mountain, the Luo and Ge families, having heard the news, came up.
Li Xiaoxia, unable to leave the house due to a leg injury, sent her husband Luo Gang and their two sons to go on her behalf, thinking that another person would add strength and prevent Su Shu and the three children at home from being disadvantaged.
Still unclear about the situation, they were concerned that the group captain’s absence might have let some troublemaker cause a commotion.
