“That… that’s not it…” Old Madam Xu said sheepishly.

“I wonder how many more ex-wives Uncle Xu has, as well as how many other children he has. Don’t tell me that all his other lovers out there have not come looking for him yet?” Qiao Mei said meanly.

“What are you saying!” Xu Hang could not stand hearing such things anymore, so he pointed at Qiao Mei and roared at her.

Xu Ba immediately gave Xu Hang a slap and said, “You have no right to speak up here! Shut up!”

“There are none! None at all! Furthermore, what this woman said may not be true! It’s hard to say if this is Xu Ba’s child! This woman went out with many men after the incident. You must not believe what this woman said!” Old Madam Xu said.

“I see that you have been keeping tabs on me. You even know that I have found another man so that I can bring up Cai Dong. I’m not related to you at all, so why do you have to ask around about me? I’m guessing it must be because you’re worried that I had given birth to a boy and that a descendant of the Xu family may end up being part of someone else’s family!” Cai Ming said.

Qiao Mei sized up Cai Ming. This woman was quite clever and did not seem like a person who could be easily deceived, nor the type who could be easily influenced. It seemed that there was really more to what happened back then.

“I don’t care about these things. I just want to know what happened back then,” Qiao Mei said impatiently.

During that time, it was common practice for the educated young people in the city to go to the countryside to help with farming. Xu Ba was one of them. The moment he arrived at his destination, he fell in love with Cai Ming at first sight. Although Cai Ming was the most beautiful and capable woman in her village, Xu Ba did not dare to tell his family about their relationship. Instead, the couple got engaged secretly and even had kids.

When the farming period was over, Xu Ba had to return to his job in the city. He promised Cai Ming that he would talk to his family and get Old Madam Xu to agree to let Cai Ming marry into the Xu family.

The wait stretched into a period of half a year. Cai Ming really could not wait any longer since her pregnant stomach was becoming more and more obvious. She made her way to Xu Ba’s house based on the address he wrote down in his letter to her. However, Old Madam Xu actually told her that Xu Ba was already dead! When Old Madam Xu heard that Cai Ming had already given birth to a son and a daughter for Xu Ba, she snatched the children away and asked Cai Ming to leave the capital.

“My own family was furious when they found out about this matter. They chased me out and I had to marry the first available man for the sake of the baby. Otherwise, my poor child would not have been able to survive!” Cai Ming said as she started crying. Cai Dong hugged Cai Ming in silence.

When Cai Ming started weeping uncontrollably, Cai Dong continued, “Some time ago, we received news that Uncle Xu is getting married again. My mother originally said that she did not want to disrupt your life, but in the end, she really could not take it lying down and just wanted to get a clear picture about what happened.”

“Then what about you? What’s your version of the story?” Qiao Mei asked Xu Ba as she looked at him.

She was already quite clear about the facts. Old Madam Xu had caused the couple to break up, separating the two lovers just like that.

“At that time, after I came back from the countryside, I had a job posting out of town. My mother had already agreed to let Cai Ming marry into our family, but later on, she told me that Cai Ming had left the children with the Xu family and that she was going to marry someone else. When I came back… it was the day when you married that man and I even saw the wedding ceremony,” Xu Ba said sadly.

Cai Ming shouted loudly, “You actually saw the ceremony! You actually came back when I was getting married! Then why didn’t you come to look for me! Why didn’t you ask me! You clearly know that I’m pregnant with your child! You actually want me to marry someone else while carrying your child?”

“Do you know how hard my life has been all these years! Do you know how much Cai Dong has suffered! You good-for-nothing! How could I have taken a fancy to you back then!”

Cai Ming was more affected by this piece of news than whatever she heard earlier. Her breathing became so rapid that she almost fainted. Qiao Mei could not watch her being in this condition. She asked Xia He to feed Cai Ming a 100-year-old ginseng pill and Cai Ming quickly looked much better.

For some reason, Qiao Mei did not feel much hatred for Cai Ming. Instead, she felt that Cai Ming seemed like a reasonable person and she was willing to sit down and have a conversation with Cai Ming.

Old Madam Xu felt very unsettled. She was too ashamed to continue staying in this room. She let out a cry and fell onto the floor. All the Xia family members in the room could tell that Old Madam Xu had pretended to faint. Xia Zhe was about to go forward to rouse Old Madam Xu when Qiao Mei shook her head at him.

“You simply believed whatever other people said! You never even came to ask me! Fine, fine, fine. Then I might as well just continue to believe that you’re already dead! How could I have met a heartless person like you! Forget it… The truth is that you didn’t love me that much back then. You’re not even comparable to my pet dog! I’ll just take it that I had invested my feelings in the wrong place!” Cai Ming said.
