Chapter 1346: Chapter 905 Adventurers_2
Another type primarily responsible for sweeping through the underground demon beasts —- of course there are demon beasts underground, and some are very powerful, but likewise, powerful demon beasts can bring valuable spoils of war. Although it is impossible to have any trade in this nearly isolated city, it is still possible to process the spoils into weapons or certain tools.
The last type concerns the exploration of the Underground City.
According to the ramblings of an old man previously, this city is in fact just a corner of the vast underground city of Dwarves. Adventurers have always wanted to delve deeper into this city, partly with the hope to expand their base and partly in hopes of obtaining magic or treasures from the legends within this vast underground labyrinth.
After all, according to legend, the history of this Underground City can be traced back to the Goddess’s Creation Era, and it surely holds many treasures that have been passed down.
For adventurers, this is also part of their life.
After all, if one could really obtain powerful treasures, then they would have a better chance at defeating the Demon King, right?
To Duanmu Huai, the life of adventurers in this world is much like that of players —- everything is for the sake of defeating the final BOSS. That’s why they rummage through places, pick locks, and adventure into the legendary underground cities…
It’s rather nice.
To Duanmu Huai, staying here is far more comfortable than staying in the Royal City of Paretia, and there’s much less trouble.
“Speaking of which, what is that up there?”
Duanmu Huai stretched out his hand, pointing to a commission at the very top of the wall, which was engraved on a stone slab, crudely marked with “Progress 15%”.
It looks like the kind of notice counting down the days to college entrance exams that’s hung on the blackboard before the exams.
“Oh, that’s the progress of the investigation into the Great Labyrinth.”
The elder lifted his head, glancing at the commission at the topmost level.
“Great Labyrinth?”
“Correct. Do you know why the Dwarves of this city were wiped out by the Demon Clan? It’s because they had expanded the city right under the feet of the Demon King Palace, and were discovered by the Demon King leading to their disaster. Afterwards, the surviving Dwarves used all kinds of methods to completely seal off this path, turning it into an immense labyrinth to prevent another invasion by the Demon Clan. It has to be said, the technology of the Age of God is truly impressive; even we cannot decipher it…”
“So, you mean, if one breaks through this labyrinth, they can reach the Demon King Palace?”
“Theoretically, yes. That’s also just a legend, of course. But certainly, it couldn’t be better if it can be accomplished. However, let me tell you, the Great Labyrinth is not easy to navigate. Although there are always adventurers who enter to hone their skills or to search for treasures, the demon beasts and traps inside are no joke, and many adventurers die inside. It’s not exactly a safe place.”
“Then let’s choose this one. Where is it?”
Duanmu Huai decisively made his decision.
“Are you sure? Well… just keep following the main road straight in, keep going and you will find a structure like a temple, that’s the entrance.”
The elder said, while taking out a badge and sketching something on it.
“There, give this to the Guard at the gate and they’ll let you through, but you’d better prepare your supplies first to avoid accidents…”
“Thanks.”
Duanmu Huai reached out to take the badge, nodded at the elder, and then left with Ogis and Zhenjiling.
“Hey… I wasn’t finished yet, really, the youngsters these days are so impatient…”
Left behind were just the old man’s grumbles of dissatisfaction.
“Big brother, are we heading to the labyrinth?”
Walking on the street, Zhenjiling inquired curiously.
“Let’s go check it out. We’re not busy with anything else anyway. If we can really get directly to the Demon King Palace, it would save us some effort. I don’t fancy wandering around in a blizzard, right?”
Duanmu Huai yawned and then looked towards Zhenjiling.
“Speaking of which, should we get you a weapon or something? Your ammo’s running low, isn’t it?”
Previously, Zhenjiling used a fair amount of ammunition while dealing with the Demon Clan member. Now, only a few sniper rifle bullets are left and as for Cain, there’s just one left — presumably saved for a point-blank nuclear shot when meeting the Demon King.
“Ah, don’t worry about that, big brother.”
As she spoke, Zhenjiling clenched her fists and swung them several times with vigour.
“Karen can still fight hand-to-hand combat. Even without weapons, there’s no problem!”
“That’s true, but it’s still better to be prepared. I’ve heard that the treasure chests in the labyrinth might still contain weapons left behind by the dwarves of the past. Hopefully, we’ll find a few useful ones.”
The entrance to the Great Labyrinth wasn’t far away. As the old man had said, if you just follow the main road, you’ll soon reach the end of it, where there is a massive stone structure built against the cliffside. It looked like an incredibly tall dwarf, with stone statues of Dwarf Guards standing on either side of the gate, as if they were Guards protecting the passage.
In the square in front of the great hall, many Adventurers could be seen, some of whom were gathered in small groups, seemingly exchanging some information.
“Who are they?”
“Probably Adventurers forming temporary teams.”
Duanmu Huai had heard from the old man that many Adventurer teams arrive here already short on manpower, and, of course, it’s impossible to proceed in that state. So they would look for companions here, like a Magic User who has lost their teammates could join a team missing a Magic User, or a team lacking a Priest would need one… Besides that, the old man also specifically reminded Duanmu Huai that, in addition to those battle-tested Adventurers, there are also the youngsters born in this city. After they grow up, they too aspire to join Adventurer teams to head towards the Demon King Palace to challenge the Demon King.
“Ex-excuse me, do you need a Priest?”
Just then, a blonde girl, wearing a robe similar to that of a Priest, approached timidly and asked anxiously while looking at Duanmu Huai. Her priestly robe looked quite worn but was nonetheless clean. The golden-haired girl was holding a Tin Rod, looking quite nervous.
“I am a Priestess of the Lady Goddess. If you need me, I can assist you…”
“No need.”
However, before the girl could finish her sentence, Duanmu Huai waved his hand to interrupt her. It was clear that she was a novice. Duanmu Huai was aiming for a speedrun, not to babysit first-timers. The girl looked young and rather timid, much like the ‘newbie players seeking a carry’ that Duanmu Huai had encountered at the entrance of game dungeons.
So naturally, Duanmu Huai had no intention of bringing her along.
“Oh, I’m sorry…”
Hearing Duanmu Huai’s refusal, the golden-haired girl turned away with a disheartened look, while Duanmu Huai glanced around.
“Let’s go in quickly.”
Otherwise, if we linger, all the newbies might come begging for help, which would also be troublesome.
