Chapter 1345: Chapter 905 Adventurers
For Duanmu Huai, coming to this city was indeed a novel experience.
Especially the adventurers here.
In fact, Duanmu Huai had seen such an opening scenario many times while playing various RPG games—-the Demon King threatening the world, the legendary Hero soon to awaken, the cliche tales of annihilating the Demon King, and so on.
Of course, such a background was quite cliche.
However, there was one question: before the legendary Hero awakened, did anyone confront the Demon King?
Well, in reality, indeed there were.
And it had been ongoing for a thousand years.
To the people of this world, being a Hero wasn’t about lineage or some ordained destiny; it was not that one was a Hero for defeating the Demon King, but rather one became known as a Hero because they defeated the Demon King.
So, ever since the Demon Clan appeared a thousand years ago and began attacking humans, there have always been those who endured hardships one after another, heading to the Demon King Palace in the Northern Land in hopes of obliterating the Demon King. Some fell along the way, others at the feet of the Demon King. Yet even so, they never gave up; for them, defeating the Demon King was a tangible mission.
And to the people of this world, after so many years of war with the Demon King’s Army, it could even be said that this had become a part of their lives.
Just like this city.
Duanmu Huai had also chatted with the adventurers here. Every year, many adventurer teams cross the border and rush here as quickly as possible–Duanmu Huai took less than five days to get here from the Northern Fortress because he could fly. For ordinary adventurers, just traversing the Northern Land, passing through the fortress, and arriving here would take nearly two months.
That’s under the assumption that everything goes smoothly.
If things don’t go well, then most of them likely would die before ever reaching this place.
Upon arriving here, the adventurers split into two groups.
One group, due to the many perils faced on their journey, no longer had the strength to fight and thus had to stay. The others would await the second thaw ten months later before making a beeline for the Demon King Palace. Of course, among this group, basically none would return.
Unless, unluckily, you break your leg the day after leaving the city…
Like this guy.
“I’ve been regretting it ever since,”
said the old man sitting in the chair, taking a drag on his cigarette and speaking indifferently to Duanmu Huai, Ogis, and the others.
“Back then, if I hadn’t been so impulsive to step on an ice cap and then slid out only to crash into a stone pillar below and break my leg… I could have continued adventuring with my companions, and maybe we could have had a chance to defeat the Demon King. But alas, in the end, they never came back either, leaving me alone struggling to survive here.”
As he spoke, the old man stood up and made his way to the counter, gesturing to Duanmu Huai.
“Alright, kid, you’ve heard enough stories, how about some work? No work, no food–that’s the rule of this city. Speaking of which, it’s rare to see adventurers as young as you…”
“I’ve seen quite a few kids around in the city,”
“Those are the descendants left by adventurers like me, who stayed in this city for various reasons.”
The old man curled his lip.
“Unable to kill the Demon King and unwilling to return home in such a defeated manner, they stay here and serve other adventurers. That’s how these kids came to be. When they grow up, they either join these adventurers to fight against the Demon King, or inherit their parents’ positions and serve adventurers.”
“Are these brats any good?”
“Hahaha, don’t look down on them, kid. True, these little devils aren’t old, but they were born in the snowfields of the Northern Land, growing up wrestling with ogres and the like, their adventuring experience is rich, rivaling even the veterans. Especially for adventurer teams that have lost members, if they can add a Magic User or a Priest, it can significantly boost their combat strength.”
As he said this, the old man squinted his eyes, sizing up Duanmu Huai and the others.
“Which one of you is a Magic User? Is it this young lady?”
“Among us… strictly speaking, we currently don’t have a Magic User.”
Duanmu Huai spread his hands helplessly; unable to use Soul Cards, he certainly wasn’t a Magic User. As for Ogis and Zhenjiling, naturally they wouldn’t use magic either…
“Then you should find a Magic User or a Priest. Don’t mind my nagging, but when you’re away from home, it’s really necessary. Especially a Priest–if you get a headache, fall ill, get poisoned or injured, a Priest could help you with that, right? Although your suit of armor does seem quite something, it’s always better to be cautious.”
“I’ll consider it.”
As Duanmu Huai spoke, he turned his head to look at the wall beside him. The wall was covered with job postings, mainly divided into three categories.
One category was mining underground. After all, adventurers need weapons, and weapons and armor need repairs. Luckily, this used to be a Dwarf city with mines nearby; this type of work could be done by anyone and just required some effort.
